Standards

There are two credentials in the Coach program that are authorized for graduation credit. Each credential has a theory component, evaluation, and a minimum number of hours of practical coaching experience.

Coach Level 1 UXSC (2 credits)

Students must complete 30 hours of practical coaching experience. Theory and evaluation requirements are met by completing one of the following options:

Option 1

• Complete the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Make Ethical Decisions training and online evaluation
  • This module can be completed online with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). Completion for this module will appear on the student's CAC online transcript.
• A minimum of 20 hours of theory from the following National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) workshops:
  • Planning a Practice
  • Design a Sport Program
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Basic Mental Skills
  • Fundamental Movement Skills
  • Run, Jump, Throw, Wheel
  • Aboriginal Coach Modules
  • Coaching Athletes with a Disability
  • Making Headway
  • Nutrition
  • Safe Sport
  • Positive Sport Environment
  • Mental Health
  • Coaching Initiation

Option 2

• Complete the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training and online evaluation
  • This module can be completed online with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). Completion for this module will appear on the student's CAC online transcript.
• Sport-specific NCCP Community Sport or Instruction – Beginner Trained course (refer to the provincial coaching programs for sport-specific courses). If less then 20 hours of theory are available for instruction, students coaches are to supplement with NCCP workshops listed in Option 1.
  • Several sport-specific NCCP courses have the Make Ethical Decisions training built into the curriculum. Students are still required to complete the Make Ethical Decision online evaluation if the training is included in the sport-specific NCCP course. Refer to the provincial coaching programs for details.

Option 3

• Completing the Richmond Oval Sport Leadership Program

Coach Level 2 UXSC (2 credits)

Students must complete 30 hours of practical coaching experience. They can meet the theory requirement by completing Competition Introduction Sport Technical Training. Completing the Competition Introduction Coach Evaluation meets the evaluation requirement.

Practical experience

Students must complete a minimum of 30 hours of monitored coaching experience.

Level 1 students must have their experience monitored and reviewed by a Competition Introduction Trained coach or higher. This coach must be trained in the sport in which a student is being evaluated.

Level 2 students must have their experience monitored by a Competition Introduction “Certified” coach or higher. This coach must be certified in the sport in which a student is being evaluated.

Practical coaching experience must be in the same sport as the trained or certified accreditations. Student coaches should keep a log of their coaching hours that includes:

• Practical coaching hours
• Teams or athletes coached
• Competition level of participation (e.g., club, regional, provincial)

The evaluating coach must provide the student coach with a verification letter that includes:

• Student name
• Number of practical coaching hours
• Team or athletes coached
• Competition level of participation
• Authorizing coach name and NCCP CC number
• Date of completion

Getting credit

Student coaches seeking to earn credit must provide proof of completion for all required program components to viaSport at coaches@viasport.ca. ViaSport will send a verification letter to the student if they have fulfilled all the requirements.

Required documentation for Level 1 includes:

• Making Ethical Decisions "Evaluated" module
• NCCP training and certifications (Locker transcript)
• Practical coach experience verification letter

The Richmond Oval Sport Leadership Program Coordinator will submit the list of students who successfully complete the program to viaSport. ViaSport will then issue a verification letter to the student.
