Recommend A 4K Camera Or Camcorder?: Digital Video Talk Forum

Looking to capture 4k videos of my family travels, pets etc. Looking to spend $1,000
I've tried two devices already a LX-100 and a G7. I liked the G7 more because of the touch screen and flip out screen. I liked the LX-100 as a pocket cam and concert 4k capture device. I'm looking for 4k video only.
I own a Nikon SLR and glass so i am not interested in buying more glass for another brand. I just want 4k video to hold me over until Nikon put's it in there cheaper SLR.

In reply to Mike1979 • Jun 10, 2016 1Well first, you might look at the Panasonic ZS100 (TZ100) over the LX100. Both are very good though.
If you are looking to shoot anything on vacations like near the ocean or mountains, then I'd suggest you narrow your search to something with an external mic input. Your only other choice to avoid a lot wind noise is a separate audio recorder, but for family video and things you might not be so motivated to syncing up video and sounds, and other editing chores.
Since you mention you are not inclined to have another DSLR type of device, a camcorder might suit you well. The Sony AX53 gives a good picture, and the BOSS stabilization is very good. For videos of your pets etc, it's likely that you are not aiming for something where you can make a lot of manual adjustments - just shoot away and enjoy the moment. It also has extended use batteries which is one less thing to worry about, and you won't need to recharge a handful of batteries every night.
Other options include the Panasonic HC-VX870K, and the HC-VX981K, but if you're moving around with your family, the BOSS is far superior to what Panasonic offers.

Callisto11,
You seem very knowledgeable in this matter and I am trying to make this comparison also.
Would you consider the Sony's AX53's BOSS stabilization superior to the new Panasonic HC-WXF991K also? Must consider that you only get the full 5-axis stabilization with HD and not 4K on the Sony?
Thanks,
BJB

In reply to BJBBJB • Jun 11, 2016I have not seen any direct comparison yet on the 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S.+ and Level Shot vs the Sony BOSS, so I can't give you any opinion yet. But as I understand it, Panasonic's latest stabilization is its Hybrid O.I.S. with some digital stabilization thrown in. I have used some digital stabilization in post and frankly haven't found the results to be very pleasing, so actually I am not holding my breath about it beating Sony's tech, but I won't jump to any conclusions.
Youtube has some examples of Sony's Boss vs the Hybrid O.I.S. though, like here. Or vs the Panasonic VX870's 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S. here & here. For me the BOSS wins out, and most others as far as I can see pretty much agree. There are other relevant factors of course, and everyone weighs them differently. One big one for me though looking at the WXF991K is that its widest angle is at 37mm (35mm equiv), whereas for my Sony AX53 it is at about 28mm. For me that is quite significant (I also deal with it on my FZ-1000) and I really like that wider shot. The WXF991K can do a much longer zoom though, however if handheld I doubt the footage would be watchable. The Sony also has a better LCD (921k pixels). Another difference is the WXF991K shoots 4K at 24 & 30fps, but for HD it's just 24 and 60fps. Rather surprising....plus for 4K it outputs at 72mbs but the Sony can do 100mbs. That said, the WXF991K is about half a pound lighter. And of course the price difference (on sale now $100 less on B&H)...plus how much shooting while walking or handheld you plan to do. Up to each person, really, but I am quite pleased with the AX53 even though I had my heart set on a true successor to the AX100 (with BOSS of course).

Thanks for those great points, it really helps put things in perspective. I am still testing trascoding with various settings (both in-camera and in transcoding) from 4K to HD with Adobe Media Encoder.
What has been your preference in shooting 4K at 30P (transcoded to HD) vs. HD at 60P?
I clearly am starting with a richer picture with 4K and the transcoded HD has more....depth to it. But when it comes to movement or panning, I am wondering if at times shooting HD at 60P is better? Now I wish I could output both 4K 30P and HD 60P but that would take more CPU than this camera has!
