Is there any way of manually resetting the service indicator on a MK5 in a way similar to the MK4? My car is on a time and distance service and only covered 2k in the last year so I don't think it needs a service and would prefer to reset the light. Everything I searched on referred to VAGCOM. Bear in mind that it's specified as being 1 year OR 10k miles. The oil can deteriorate through age as well as milage. To protect the car's most expensive component, spending £30 quid or so on an oil change seems like a good idea to me. #4 · Jan 11, 2010 Interesting comment about the oil. Having spoken to my local VW garage, they told me that all the oil they use is 'long life oil' as they only have one drum to store the oil in. Even on the cars which are on annual service schedule, they still use the longer life oil. I bought my car, a Sep 07 (57) GTI ED30, 1 year ago from a large car supermarket type place. The car had 17K on the clock and had no service history but they serviced it when I bought it (to 'full VW standards' apparently!). Since then I have done a mere 5K and the car this now saying it needs a service in 6 days. I presume this means the car is set to time/distance service? So I'm not sure what to do now. Should I just reset the service indicator and get it serviced in 12 months time? Or should I take it to my dealer and get it serviced anyway (the car is still in warranty)? Or should I get my dealer to change it over to long life service? And if so what does this involve and will it cost? Will they have to change the oil? Get it serviced by VW or a specialist now, seen as it's not a VW history. #9 · Jan 12, 2010 HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT BESIDES AN OIL CHANGE. 'VISUAL INSPECTION' (READ 18 YR OLD TRAINEE MECHANIC) AND A QUICK SCAN ON VAGCOM, THEY DON;T DO MUCH ELSE. I READ OF A GUY WHO HAD A HONDA ACCORD AND AFTER 100K MILES, IT WAS STILL RUNNING LIKE NEW. WHAT DID HE CHANGE IN THIS TIME? JUST THE SCREENWASH AND TYRES. NEVER EVEN BOTHERED WITH THE OIL! LETS FACE IT, MOST OF THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH CARS ARE NOT DOWN TO A LACK OF SERVICING, JUST A FAILURE OF COMPONENTS WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD A PROBLEM AND A MERE SERVICE RESOLVED IT? Sure at main dealer rates it hurts everyone but go somewhere else then. Servicing is key to a cars life. The oil (most important thing as you mentioned), the spark plugs, brake fluid, coolant, gearbox oil etc. These fluids and plugs are not made to last the lifetime of the car, but just a cycle. If you do not service the car then it causes components to fail prematurely etc etc. #11 · Jan 12, 2010 well without trying to get into an argument with you (you seem like a nice chap), I am merely stating that servicing seems to be overrated. Look, I have had both my cars since new and have religiously followed the service regime, My point is that whenever i Have had a problem with a car (this is almost 20 years of driving), the garage a) never found it during an inspection AND b) always advised me of things that I already knew about (brakes etc etc). I would say of all the things that need doing on a car, oil is the most important; to your point, I could add all other fluids as well. after that, I don;t think the rest are as important and I am inclined to take my chances. #12 · Jan 12, 2010 I see your point but to me you just have to, it's vital. It seems like your probably going to the wrong garage[:p]. In my experience a poorly serviced car is much likelier(sp?) to break down/fail than a properly serviced one. It starts to make a difference once the car is over 3 years old. In my last service they brought up things which needed doing (cv boot and brakes). Got them done by a specialist who do a good job, without the service I would have kept driving because I couldn't tell the cv boot had gone. #13 · Jan 12, 2010 I guess you are right, but I said that doing the visual inspection is no big deal if you know your cars. I guess I am just a little bit jaded after all these years of getting a main dealer stamp. I just think they miss the big things that really cost big bucks. Nobody knows when you head gasket might blow, camshaft will fail or other things. If the service included a compression test & possibly taking the rocker cove off, I would buy the fact that I was getting VFM My local VW garage is fine. I know the service manager there very well. Funnily enough he shared my opinion. He said that they pay the junior mechanics £5.8 / hour and bill the labour at £110. You would be lucky if a master tech actually services your car any more. He may do the difficult jobs and look over a juniors work IMO He's cool though and aid they would even do my 312 brake conversion (so long as I used genuine new parts!) having said all that, i'll probably bottle it and keep going to VAG as I have always done. Makes you think how much you are paying for 'peace of mind'! #14 · Jan 13, 2010 Well, I wasn't quite expecting to start a war! To be honest I would be tending to agree with josh normally, especially as I've only done 6K since the last service but in saying that I have rung my local dealer and booked it in for a service! Whereby they are gladly relieving me of 175 quid for the privilege! The dealer reckoned that GTI's be serviced yearly anyway. Not sure how true that it In my case I thought that cos I don't really know the service history of the car except it had been serviced by the car supermarket a year ago, and I've no idea if they used long life oil or what.( I guess this was the cars first every service but who knows)I, I kinda feel happier for VW to service it now and I'll keep it on a fixed time/distance service regime.
