  • Restaurant Review: Nho Saigon
Restaurant Review: Nho SaigonThe columnist visits the restaurants unannounced, orders meals online and pays her own billsRashmi Uday Singh | TNN Updated : Apr 23, 2022, 16:28 ISTA teasing sweetness, flirtatious spicy kisses, tantalising tartness, juiciness and crispness all in one bite. Refreshing herbs too. Welcome to Mumbai’s first dedicated Vietnamese restaurant Nho Saigon. I’ve been a long time fan of Vietnamese cuisine (especially its national dish Pho).Gordon Ramsay, Payal Kapoor, Vikram Merchant and the Kozaracks. What do the above have in common? They love Vietnamese cuisine. Vietnamese cuisine tops Gordon’s list. My lunch guests are thrilled to try it too. The beauty with brains, Payal Kapoor a practising Chartered Accountant, combines fashion and fitness, and is a globetrotting gourmet. Always ready to help Amrita is getting even more fluent in Spanish and more adept at cooking while her husband Richard Kozarack, an American born and raised in India, is retired and living in Alibag. He enjoys cooking and gardening. The sporting and articulate South Bombay foodie , with an adventurous palate, Vikram Merchant is willing to stretch his horizon beyond the sea-link.Along with our other discerning gourmet who prefers to remain anonymous, we have a superb afternoon, sample the range of mead, nibble our way through the vibrant menu. DÉCORA masterful job of bringing alive the colours, bustle and textures of Vietnam in the relatively small, 1000 sqft room. Cane curtains drape the entrance, ceramic wall lamps, hues of wooden tiles, screen-printed tiles, an exposed ceiling coated with terracotta complete the decor. Quirky details, like the abstract noodle shaped light over the bar ( reminiscent of the Vietnamese ‘pho’). Kudos to the design team!VIVE LA VIETNAMWhat a deliriously deliciously happy polygamous marriage of Chinese and French and several other influences which produce this sassy, serene, vibrant, wholesome Vietnamese offspring. As seen in the photograph, Payal is holding up the delicious surprise of the afternoon. The Hanoi classic, the crispy and crunchy rice paper Vietnamese pizza (Bánh tráng Gà) grilled over charcoal topped with our choice of chicken and egg. Crispy Pork and Pomegranate, perfectly dressed with jaggery vinaigrette is equally refreshing.Summer Cucumber Salad and Summer Roll made up of crunchy vegetables, encased in the summer roll is delicious. Delicately steamed barramundi fish, green pepper cottage cheese, spicy chicken curry and coconut rice are flavourful. The buff pho and the fishball version of the traditional five-spice broth with noodles and added condiments pass the acid test of a good Vietnamese meal. Our meal ended on a sweet note with the chocolate and coffee tart (Chua Cay) perfectly paired with black sesame ice-cream. We also try the honey-based alcoholic mead five tasters, enjoy the Guava IPA Hoi An, a tequila based cocktail too. MINUS POINTSIt can get noisy and cluttered. Thick skinned prawn dumplings were overcooked. Black Pepper Lamb and Shaking Buff could do with improvement. The avocado puree and coconut ice cream dessert is avoidable. MY POINTEven if you’ve never eaten Vietnamese food before, you will love its fresh ingredients, minimum use of dairy and oil, interesting textures, freshness of the herbs and vegetables. Many familiar Chinese food flavours and dishes (like wanton and hargow) and French influence (baguette) are present too.I first heard of Vietnamese food from the Michelin star Chef Gordon Ramsay and that the chef of Nho Saigon, the brilliant Nikhil Abhyankar has trained under him. The vibrant flavors, and surprising textures that Chef Abhyankar conjures is exciting. Kudos to Shaurya Malwa and his three young co-founders for gifting Mumbai’s first dedicated Vietnamese restaurant and meadery. The restaurant is open throughout the day. A labour of love, intelligent design and attention to detail, be it the food, drinks, service or décor. PS: If only Nho could move to a bigger space. Considering how popular it is, I’m sure it will.Where: Nho SaigonUnit no 1 B, Ground floor, Godrej BKC, 68, G Block Road, Bandra Kurla ComplexCall: 7045122211Time: 12 pm to 1.30 amMeal for two: Rs 2000Rating: Food: 4 Service: 4 Decor: 4From around the webComments (0)Thankyou for your comment.
