Synopsis
Tomoya Aki, an otaku, has been obsessed with collecting anime and light novels for years, attaching himself to various series with captivating stories and characters. Now, he wants to have a chance of providing the same experience for others by creating his own game, but unfortunately, Tomoya cannot do this task by himself. He successfully recruits childhood friend Eriri Spencer Sawamura to illustrate and literary elitist Utaha Kasumigaoka to write the script for his visual novel, while he directs. Super-group now in hand, Tomoya only needs an inspiration to base his project on, and luckily meets the beautiful, docile Megumi Katou, who he then models his main character after. Using what knowledge he has, Tomoya creates a new doujin circle with hopes to touch the hearts of those who play their game. What he does not realize, is that to invoke these emotions, the creators have had to experience the same feelings in their own lives. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

It's a fairly unique plot concept, and while the show is definitely more geared around the rom-com elements than actual game design, I think it does it well. In terms of its rom-com elements, Saekano does a good job of balancing all of the romantic interests against each other, rather than over or underdeveloping any one girl. However, there are some flaws with the formula that I can't ignore, mainly with the MC. While Aki is a likable ...guy, he offers practically nothing to the group. Sure, this is meant to be a gag of sorts, but if he's not writing the story, drawing the art, coding the game, or otherwise contributing to the game, how is it even his game? He also suffers from self-insert MC disease, where all the tremendously talented and beautiful girls around him just happen to be in love with him despite his lack of positive traits and lack of interest in them. In this case, it doesn't even make sense that the MC doesn't have these skills either. He's mentioned to be an avid reviewer and consumer of anime, so I'd think he'd at least be able to contribute to the writing and overall plan of the story. Instead, he's intentionally nerfed as some kind of gag. Don't get the wrong idea however: I really do like this show. It's really enjoyable, and while I have my faults with the MC, he does improve a bit. In a harem anime like this, you kinda have to accept that the MC isn't going to be anything special, so if you can endure that, this show is worth the watch. Two out of the three main girls are already in love with him from episode 1 just that he loves 2D girls over 3D. The whole premise is he wants to create the best romance game, but has no motivation to actually do it. Totally relatable to everyone that goes to school and has homework due over the weekend. The ecchi in this show is nonexistent until the last few episodes with Michiru, his cousin which makes perfect sense. Funny enough this was the best part as the fan service was good ...with touching scenes between them. The only thing bringing me back to watch is to hopefully see the mc get with Kato the emotionless heroine. Honestly, I feel Kato steals the spotlight in the show as any moment she is a part of is funnier and more enjoyable. I plan to continue to season 2 as I like the addition of Michiru to the circle as well. Overall, the animation is decent with the red eye outline giving the show some uniqueness, soundtrack decent, plot is generic, enjoyment was okay, and the only redeeming factor were the characters seem to have more depth than given on screen which makes me coming back to watch. 6/10 Reviewer’s Rating: 6 What did you think of this review? I was also left unsatisfied just rating it a 1 so now I'm writing a review for this. The show was boring at its best parts and completely insufferable every other time. A lot of the reviews refer to the fact that it's a parody. Parody of what? Parody of itself? It's a one-to-one copy of what it's trying to parody (apparently). Of course, this was completely lost on me because I assumed that the show was just that bad, and I still don't see how it's a parody. The ...only good part is that the 'boring heroine' had some rare moments where at least there was something between the lines here and there. I do like it when I have to fire some neurons to connect with what a character is saying. That's it. Moving on to The blonde and black haired girl really make it uncomfortable to watch. Their overt flirting with the main character gets far too uncomfortable. For example, I don't think anyone wanted to watch the scene of the blonde girl and the main character voice act a self-insert porno in front of each other. The main character himself is the most insufferable being to exist. Self-proclaimed otaku (already a red flag). I'm sick of his speeches about my dream this my dream that. He's always yelling and his voice still rings in my ear. The arc where they try to develop the friendship/relationship between him and the blonde girl was just them yelling stuff at each other that didn't make any sense. Then she cries and they make up. All the arcs are as boring as I just described. Reviewer’s Rating: 1 What did you think of this review?
