SAN Storage (HP MSA 2040) Installation And Configuration

I would like to share this document for those who are going to install the Storage HP MSA 2040 first time.

I know you can rack mount the storage easily but herculean task is to configure it. So I am going to tell you the steps to configure the HP SAN Storage.

Introduction :

HP MSA 2040 Storage specs

ENERGY STAR certified HPE MSA 2040 is a high-performance storage array designed for entry-level Hewlett Packard Enterprise customers desiring 8Gb/16Gb Fibre Channel, 1GbE/10GbE iSCSI, or 12Gb SAS connectivity with 4 host ports per controller. The MSA 2040 Storage array provides an excellent value for customers needing performance balanced with price to support initiatives such as consolidation and virtualization.

The MSA 2040 delivers this performance by offering:

• High-performance controller architecture • 6GB cache per controller, 12GB per storage array • Support for SSDs, Enterprise SAS HDDs, Midline SAS HDDs, and Self Encrypting Drives • SAN and SAS interfaces • Up to four (4) host ports per controller, 8 host ports per storage array • Two new MSA 2040 Controllers: – MSA 2040 SAN Controller   > 8Gb/16Gb FC connectivity and/or   > 1GbE/10GbE iSCSI connectivity – MSA 2040 SAS Controller   > 6Gb/12Gb SAS connectivity

Licensing

The HPE MSA 2040 Storage ships standard with a license for 64 snapshots for increased data protection. The MSA2040 now offers a simplified licensing strategy with one optional software suite. The Advanced Data Services Suite includes the following software licenses: – HPE MSA 2042 Performance Automated Tiering LTU – HPE MSA 512-Snapshot Software LTU – HPE MSA Remote Snap Software LTU

SETUP

Note: Default IP range for HP SAN storage MSA 2040 is 10.0.0.1/2

  • First you need to connect your laptop and storage with cross cabling (CAT 5 CAT 6 Lan cable) and assign the same range IP address.

CONFIGURATION

  • Now in your system browser type the default IP

https://10.0.0.1 or https://10.0.0.2

  • And press enter to login storage account.

Now Enter User Name -: manage

Enter password -:  !manage

(This ID and password is default for these series of storage)

  • Now click on Home to check the Fibber cable connectivity and check which port is active.

Configuring RAID 5 ON storage-:

  • Click on Home button > Action>select Configuration

  • Assign Time & Date manually or define through NTP server.

  • Enter here New password for Manage user or leave it default to avoid any password remember issue.

  • IP assignment

Assign IP address manually or take it through DHCP.

You can use this IP address to access your storage through web link and you can manage it from remotely.

  • Select from here Web browser settings.

  • You can configure Mail notification from here if you want to receive any auto generated mail but to configure this you should have SMTP service.

Click next

  • You can define the controller speed but we are leaving it as default settings.

Now Click next

Click on finish

Click Yes

Now you can see all Hard Disk that you have installed on storage, In my storage, I have installed 6 HDD that is showing below:

Now come to the Configuration Settings:

a-      In type select Virtual

b-      In Name-Assign your storage name

c-      In RAID level assign RAID (In my case I have select RAID 5)

d-     And select all Six HDD and

click on ADD

It will the configuration as selected :

Click OK

Click on Host and you will see here all 4 unassigned drive

Now click on pool and see the all HDD space, storage Name and Drive space

Now map the virtual volume with Host Name

First, you need to select the Group name and after that, you need to follow below step

A  Click on Host

B  Click on Action > Add Host

Assign Hostname and click ok

Click OK.

If you want to remove the host you can simply remove it from here

First, you need to select a Group Name

  1. a)  Select Host and click on Action
  2. b) Select Remove Host

Creating a Virtual volume :

Click on Action –> select Create Virtual Volume

Assign the Volume Name and drive space

Click on Add row for add multiple Volume at the same time:

How to delete Volume

a) First, you need to select Volume Name that you want to delete.

B  Click on Action select Delete Volume

How to MAP Volume

a).  Select Mapping

b).  Click on Action >MAP

Select Volume and Host Name on which you want to MAP

Click on MAP

Above the configuration from SAN storage side now you have to check from the server side, mapped Disk space\volume should be visible in your system Disk management.

Initially, it will Display in Offline Mode and you need to bring it Online for this you need to just right click on Device and select Online.
