#1 · Jan 3, 2019 I have an SKX007 that has a damaged 7s26 movement and I am going to replace it with either another 7s26 or NH36 "upgrade". Why go through the trouble of doing this "upgrade" to NH36? Advantages/Disadvantages? Thanks! Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Jan 3, 2019 The NH36 is a hacking and hand winding 7s26 essentially, so if you dont want either then no need to bother really. Personally I would much prefer the upgrade. I'm not a fan of a watch with a seconds hand that doesnt hack. #3 · Jan 3, 2019 I guess what I am interested in is why everyone calls it an upgrade. I am a newbe to watches so I am hoping for an elementary explanation. Why is hand-winding advantageous? #24 · Jan 4, 2019 handing widing is like having a dog you can put on a treadmill for his daily walk. not having hand winding is like taking the dog out everyday around the block. i personally tried both and will never go to the 7s26 movement. hand winding 2 or 4 seikos before i go to sleep is much more convenient, and the hacking is amazing so i can see really how many seconds i am losing per day. Show more replies 0 Reply #4 · Jan 3, 2019 It's mostly the hacking that matters. IMHO, a watch that hacks is so much nicer than one that doesn't. I have an NH36 (day/date) in my Seiko 5 field watch. I still give it a few shakes to get it going rather than hand wind it... It's an auto after all. Image Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk #5 · Jan 3, 2019 I suppose hand winding also is simply a point of distinction... something the base movement doesn't do. An added feature. But Seikos are so easy to start anyway that it's not a big deal for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk #6 · Jan 3, 2019 There isn't any evidence of any inherent accuracy advantages to be found in the NH36 vs the 7S26. However what tends to happen is that someone will find it difficult keeping the 7S26 fully wound exclusively through wrist movement (power reserve hovering around 50% for example). And since timekeeping is most accurate at full wind, the wearer may find the 7S26 to be inaccurate at the lower state of wind. With an NH36, it's easier to keep it fully wound up, potentially producing more accurate timekeeping. #7 · Jan 3, 2019 Think of your watch as someone you are in a romantic relationship, you've been together for a while holding-hands, kissing, playfully touching,,, you need to go all the way but you can't until you are able to sync the second hand precisely. Once you have gone there you will know the true meaning of a complete fulfilling relationship! Sent from my K92 using Tapatalk #8 · Jan 3, 2019

Some guy is syncing his second hand and getting slapped in the face right now because of you. Show more replies 0 Reply #10 · Jan 3, 2019 Hacking on a non-cosc automatic watch is next to useless. Hand-winding is good if you're lazy and can't wind the mainspring by, well, hand. The "real" way. #11 · Jan 3, 2019 (Edited) Wrong. You are a wanna be comedian, you need to get a "late night" TV gig. Sent from my K92 using Tapatalk 4 Replies #13 · Jan 3, 2019 (Edited) The guy asked about SKX DIVERS. Come on. The upgrade is a very reasonable choice. Not to mention that he could get a movement, just by chance that meets COSC requirements. It loses about 45 seconds in seven days... Not bad. I set it every Sunday. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk #17 · Jan 4, 2019

Even better when the movement is fast. I just pull out the crown for a few seconds and push it back in and keep going. Show more replies 0 Reply #18 · Jan 4, 2019 Okay I am going to do the NH36 installation. I found a ton of these for sale on eBay for ~$35-40 USD. Is there a specific manufacturer of the NH36 I should purchase from? #20 · Jan 4, 2019 my 4r36 branded skx upgrade regulated for past 6 months is under 1 second a day. my nh36a skx is doing +3 a day. #21 · Jan 4, 2019 Both movt are essentially the same ! #22 · Jan 4, 2019 A lot must come down to who regulates the particular movement. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk #23 · Jan 4, 2019 The 7s26 and NH36 are the same movements, the SII just add few parts to be able to hack and handwind. That doesn't mean it's better or worst, it does different things. To compare this movement to a COSC mov is o|, a 7s (4r ect etc) will never meet the positional requirements of that test or the ISO 8319 standards; BUT in the real life it can be a really good sharp movement running few + or - s/d. To be lucky is the real fact, but you can test the watch for 10 - 20 days (wearing the watch as your standard way) and let it be regulated by a good watchsmith (explaining him how you worn the watch and the sharp time it gained or lost in the number of days you tested). Benefits? Drawback? It's up to your taste. I love the minimal approach of Seiko to the 7s, are you obsessed by setting the watch every day or very often? Buy a quartz or set the watch in the morning when the charge is low and at last this mov will hack (with power under about 30 - 40% it will stop the second hand turning the crown anticlock wise). To charge a low power running watch by turning the crown is umpleasant for me, I find easyer to shake the watch 10 seconds than unscrew the crown, turn, set the time again and screw back. When the watch is with no power to have the hacking or not is useless, I can syncro the second hand giving few shake, setting the hand stopped by the crown (as above). The only case I see an upgrade is swapping a NH15, again the same movement, but with a better mainspring (hacking and handwinding included), you have a longer power reserve and a better running due to a less sensibility of the spring to have full or less charge. In this case you may find a drawback (apart the higher cost of the movement: about 2 pizzas), you'll have to bring your old mov to be cannibalized of few parts to have the day wheel in your new mov. (you need also a new stem and crown, same as with the 4s). Enjoy :-! #26 · Jan 4, 2019 Great. SO what’s the going rate and best source for an NH36 or 7S26 movement? I see cheap ones on eBay for $35-45.00. Are these legit? #28 · Jan 5, 2019

Yeah that's about what they go for. Keep in mind, if you're putting it in an SKX, you'll need to get a custom stem as well since the stock 7S26 stem will not fit the NH36 movement. I think you can get a SARB059 stem for around $20-30 which will work. Also you'll need to keep the 4:00 day wheel and swap that in since the NH36 movement will almost certainly come with a 3:00 day wheel. 1 Reply #27 · Jan 5, 2019 . #31 · Jan 6, 2019 (Edited) I'm sure there must be a thread on the subject of backing or stalling out the seconds hand, can't find it though. #33 · Oct 16, 2021 I have had 7s26A B and C SKX watches as well as an NH movement and see no practical difference other than the hand winding. Hacking is not important to me and I like to keep things original as long as possible. If you get an NH movement please remember that you will need a new crown and stem. #34 · Oct 18, 2021 Hi there SeikoPsyche. I’m an owner of a Seiko 5 with a 7S26-0040. It stopped working recently and I’m looking to replace it with a new movement. I found this forum and your thread headline. I am no watch-modder. Just want to know if NH36 can just replace the 7S26. Anything i need to pay attention? This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread. Insert Quotes Post Reply
