Pugwash P I have a 2001 B5.5 1.8T Passat. I've just done an oil and filter change and I'm now trying to reset the "Service Now" message which appears in the red display in the centre of the instrument cluster when I turn on the ignition. (It clears itself after about ten seconds). To reset this the handbook says "With the ignition off press and hold the trip meter reset button" - (and) - "Turn the knob to reset the minutes on the digital clock to the right." "The display will then return to normal." I must be missing something here because all that happens with mine is that the trip resets to zero. The "Service Now" message still appears when I turn on the ignition. I've tried it various ways but it makes no difference. (Holding buttons down for ages, doing one before the other, releasing one before the other etc etc. Can anyone help? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance, Pugwash. #1 · Dec 14, 2005 I have a 2001 B5.5 1.8T Passat. I wanna know too. #3 · Dec 14, 2005 Pugwash, the reset button you dealed with is only for trip reset and clock adjustment. To get off the "SERVICE NOW" sign you have to visit a dealer to reset it. They will plug in their com to your car and adjust the next mileage for servicing. Yeah.. its stupid but that the only way how they do bussiness. So visit a VW dealer and PAY!! for problem lost. I HATE VW SERVICE centre but thats the only place where they make you go. #4 · Dec 14, 2005 Does that mean that even VAG-com cannot clear this? #5 · Dec 14, 2005 VW Dealer visit Thanks for that. However, it does actually say how to do this in the handbook and these are the instructions which I followed. OK, so I know it didn't work, but why do they put it in the handbook if it doesn't work? It's in Section 3.1 (Controls and Equipment) Page 12. (Your handbook maybe different I guess) Regards, Pugwash. #6 · Dec 14, 2005 You can reset it manually, see this thread for details. We had a good debate about the various methods but it would appear the only one that worked was the one near the end. http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197179 Hope this helps Sam #7 · Dec 14, 2005 hi pugwash. i too cannot re-set my service light how it says in the manual.have a look here-http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197179 there seem some that can, some can't:confused: maybe its my aftermarket sterio?i know they can interfere with diagnostics....just a thought.it seems if you reset the service interval to o,then obvoiusly the car will think it needs a service.i think thats what i must have done. heres the manual; Image #8 · Dec 15, 2005 did ya get it? #9 · Dec 16, 2005 Done it! To reset OIL warning: 1. Shut all doors (I don't know why but it doesn't work with the doors open) 2. Press and hold "mile reset button" 3. Turn ignition key on without starting the engine 4. Release "mile reset button" (OIL will be displayed) 5. Turn the "clock adjustment button" clockwise ---- will be displayed JOB DONE! To reset INSP warning: 1. Shut all doors (once again, I don't know why) 2. Press and hold "mile reset button" 3. Turn ignition key on without starting the engine 4. Release "mile reset button" (OIL will be displayed) 5. Press "mile reset button" once (INSP will be displayed) 6. Turn the "clock adjustment button" clockwise ---- will be displayed JOB DONE! I was successful after a few trial, partly following the Haynes instructions (which do not work) #12 · Sep 15, 2011 Not to sound like an idiot, but is this on this car and older ones only, non-US spec'd cars? I have an 02 and I have never seen this. Maybe mine is turned off (not that I give a rats ass, I can do my own math). Inquiring minds and all that... #13 · Sep 15, 2011

Yes, this is for Euro spec'd cars with variable service interval indicator. The service intervals are based on variety of factors in addition to mileage and elapsed time which maximize the lifespan of oil and everything else. These are much better than fixed service intervals used on US Passat's.
