GarethTrek G Hi all, I have a 2014 Trek Fuel Ex 8 with Shimano M552, 42/32/24 crank set / chain rings. I've ordered a replacement chain & cassette as the chain snapped and the cassette is looking rather worn. I'm also thinking about buying replacement chain rings so it's all nice and new! Please can someone advise where I can buy a complete assembly from, or even just the three chain rings? I've looked on some websites and although out of stock the cranks & chain rings are about £60/70. If I can get the three chain rings cheaper than the assembly I would go for that option. They're 175 - is that the length of the crank? Would like some advice as to how worn they are. Many thanks in advance! 1936479 #1 · Jun 25, 2021 Hi all, I have a 2014 Trek Fuel Ex 8 with Shimano M552, 42/32/24 crank set / chain rings. Would I be able to use this as a replacement, or even strip off the chain rings and swap over to replace mine? I'm not sure if I need the bottom bracket either. Sorry, I'm a novice bike mechanic! 1936480 #3 · Jun 25, 2021 The chainrings will be compatible with your existing crankset. You could likely replace your old cranks entirely with the ones you posted and not notice much difference as the arm length is only 5mm shorter on the new crankset. You would probably experience less pedal strikes on rocks and such. The other possibility to consider is to take this opportunity to switch to a 1x setup. Remove all three chainrings and replace with a single narrow wide 30t or 32t chainring mounted in the middle position. Middle position is 104bcd. Replace your cassette with a wider range cassette from Shimano or Sunrace. #4 · Jun 25, 2021 Many thanks for your response! I might go for those as I’d probably prefer to keep the bike on its original setup. Would you recommend changing the bottom bracket as well or just the chain rings? Is it a relatively easy job to change? I assume the BB on the a bay advert is exactly the same as the one I’ve currently got on the bike. If I’m stripping the bike down I’m thinking is it a good opportunity to change this as well for a few pounds more - if it’s relatively easy to do that is! cheers! #5 · Jun 28, 2021 (Edited) I had this exact bike and crankset. Just find any shimano 10speed chain which have 104 BCD for the big and medium rings and 64 BCD for small rings. They are getting harder to find though... I actually suspect that it might be cheaper for you to junk the 3x10 and replace with a M5100 1x11 which has a 11-51 cassette. it will work with your HG freehub and the 1x system will be almost the same range but without the complexity of the 3x and front mech if you do this, you keep the existing bottom bracket and rear freehub but replace the cassette, rear derailleur and shifter. You might be able to put a cheap 32t or 34t narrow/wide 1x chainring with 104 BCD on your existing M552 crank as well. Just make sure the chainring clears the chainstay!!! The first response above also suggested a single chain ring so this may be the right way to go. Having the same range of gears with less chain rings sounds like a sensible - less to go wrong, less adjustment, etc. I’ll look into this option further! If it works out around the same cost it might be the best option. Thanks Dave! #7 · Jun 28, 2021

Happy to help. if you go down this path, you will need:
  • Rear Derailleur: RD-M5100 Deore
  • Cassette - CS-M5100 11 speed
  • Shifter: Any 11 speed including SL-M5100 Deore, SL-M7000 SLX, SL-M8000 XT
  • Chain: CN-HG601-11 SLX or CN-HG701-11 XT
  • Chainring: 32t or 34t narrow-wide chainring which fits 104 BCD.

A lot of riders tend to go single chain ring up front so it’s probably a good way forward! #9 · Jun 28, 2021 Good option, but I'd say it depends. If you enjoy having the large ring for streets or dirt roads you might miss it. With 1x there is some tradeoff depending on chainring for high and low gearing. Make sure you have the right tools. Crank puller for older style cranks. Newer Shimano bottom brackets (hollowtech II) have their own tool. #10 · Jun 28, 2021 It would be handy having the large chain ring for cycling back along the canal from the trail centre. Sounds like it’s swings and roundabouts - pros and cons for each setup. #11 · Jun 29, 2021

If you are interested in retaining the existing triple, here is a suggestion: 1) Confirm what "system" chainring you currently have by checking the stamping on the existing chainrings. it might be "AE" or "AK". All 3 chainrings must have the matching code to work together. It does not matter if they are Deore, SLX or XT, they will work together if the are matching code ? 2) google the following: Shimano 10 speed triple chainring 42t 104 BCD Shimano 10 speed triple chainring 32t 104 BCD Shimano 10 speed triple chainring 24t 64 BCD 3) Depending on what you can find, you might need to mix and match Deore, SLX and XT chainrings. Back when I swapped my 3 chainrings on my Fuel ex 8. I bought Steel Deore for the 24t, Steel SLX for the 32t and a shiny Alloy XT M770 42t. (It was beautiful ? and made the whole bike look great) 1936913 0 Reply #12 · Jun 29, 2021 Thanks Dave! I didn’t realise you can mix the different models (Deore , XT, etc.) as long as the codes match. That might help actually as a lot of shimano parts are out of stock at the moment. I’m more likely to get a complete set if able to mix and match! #13 · Jan 26, 2023 Hey all! I replaced the chain rings, cassette & chain back in 2021. I replaced with all standard to keep the bike standard. Thanks for all your help before! A few friends have recently bought new bikes and they all have single chain rings with 11 or 12 speed cassettes. I’m now seeing the advantages of this set-up so considering stripping the bike down and going with a single chain ring and 11 speed cassette. Using the shopping list that Dave_rh kindly put together puts the cost of doing this to around £150, so not too bad. If I use the existing crank set can I use the existing 32 tooth chain ring? Or do I need a different chain ring for this project? Alternatively, if I wanted to buy a new crank set does anyone know what spec I need to buy? Mine are currently 175mm in length. Is there a kit I can buy with everything that I need? Ideally would like Shimano. Many thanks in advance! Insert Quotes Post Reply
