snakemau S Hello!, I currently have a 2019 Blur C S kit with Sram Eagle GX. I would like to change it all to Shimano XT M8100 (except brakes as I already replaced the originals with Maguras MT8 Race) or Sram X01. Now the question is, is it worth it to replace all Sram for XT or upgrade the current GX to X01? I'm changing the bb to a Chris King one and also will be using Chris King hubs on Enve M525 or Santa Cruz Reserve 25 with either the new microspline or the sram freehub. I know they are similar in weight for both XT and X01, but price wise its a big difference...I have always used XT since 1999, this is my first bike that came with Sram and honestly not loving the shifting...could be just because of the GX cassette or the shifter, but in any case its going to get upgraded, just need to decide is X01 or XT as long as either of these are compatible with Chris King (also I have been using only CK since 1999 in all my bikes)...now I know its a personal choice and I should demo a bike with XT but none of the lbs near me have one, so any of you had a chance to use the new 12 speed XT M8100 set and or the X01? how does it perform? My interest is marathon and XC. Thanks #1 · Jan 28, 2020 Hello!, I currently have a 2019 Blur C S kit with Sram Eagle GX. Although XT shifts nicer under load. #3 · Jan 28, 2020 I agree on the XT is a being cheaper. I currently have x01, but prior have had xt stuff. I do like the xt shifting better on previous generations, but have gotten used to the SRAM after 6 months. MY last xt was 11 speed so I haven't ridden the 12 speed yet. Agree with Markopic. Just ride it till it's worn out then upgrade. #4 · Jan 28, 2020 I have a bike set-up with an 8100/9100 shifter and rear derailleur. I love the way it shifts. The Sram shifts nice too, but not this nice. If I were you, I'd keep the XO1 carbon cranks (due to weight savings) and get the remainder Shimano drivetrain. #5 · Jan 28, 2020 I just switched from SRAM X1 11 speed to Shimano XT 12 speed and I only have 2 rides on the new XT so far. As of right now I liked the X1 shifter better but maybe it’s because I was used to it after using it for 3 years. The XT shifter is a bit more stiff to press the levers but also has a more positive feel meaning you definitely know you shifted when you hear and feel the click. I still like the XT better though because of the fact that I can shift under full load while climbing and it is incredibly smooth. Maybe the XT shifter will feel a bit better after a break in period, as my SRAM shifter was well broken in. Can’t say anything about SRAM 12 speed because I haven’t used it but I’ve heard the adjustment can be more finicky. I've admittedly been a Shimano guy, but GX Eagle was comparable to the 11 speed XT; however, the new XT 12 speed is better than either in form and function. Imma gonna make some popcorn. #7 · Jan 28, 2020 Did Shimano license the micro-spline free hub to King yet? It seems that you are dead set on King hubs, so if they didn't get that going yet, you are SOL on Shimano. At 1st, I'm pretty sure it was just DT swiss, I9, and Shimano for hub offerings. #8 · Jan 28, 2020 CK did get licensing I believe at the beginning of the year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 0 Reply #9 · Jan 28, 2020 King hubs with microspline will be available next month I believe. Yes, the shimano 12 speed stuff shifts much better than the sram stuff. I had x01 eagle for 2 years and the shimano shifting is considerably smoother. But it's probably not worth it unless your current drivetrain is worn out or you just have $ burning a hole in your pocket. I just wanted new stuff when I built my new bike. But I could have lived with the sram stuff I had. If the new wheels are driving the bus on this decision, you really need to be sure one way or the other. Converting the driver on a King hub after the fact is stupid expensive (50% of the hub cost). #10 · Jan 28, 2020 Ok yeah, I'm waiting for CK to release the new microspline, (Jan 31), so I can see the actual cost of the hubs with the driver, cause yeah $313 for just the conversion is ridiculous! And true I guess I can wait for the current set up to worn out and then replace it all...I just want to have it dialed for the end of the year as I plan on going to Costa Rica to do La Ruta de Los Conquistadores at the end of October, so would like all set up by August to be sure all works fine and no issues. Show more replies 0 Reply #11 · Jan 28, 2020 (Edited) The biggest difference will be the weight in the cassette. The X01 (300gr) cassette is much lighter than the XT (470gr). The GX Eagle cassette is some 20gr lighter than the XT. The X01 crank is also some ~150gr lighter than XT. It'll be up to you if the extra cash is worth the weight savings. If you go by pricing (and weight)...X01 is more comparable to XTR. #14 · Jan 30, 2020 My vote XO1 #15 · Jan 30, 2020 I have both on 2 different bikes. Here's my take: M8100 Pros: -Shifts under load up and down the cassette. Shifting at full sprint? Go for it. It actually shifts better the more power you put down. -Overall smoother shifting. -Shifter has a more direct feel. -Quieter than SRAM if tuned properly. -Double upshift. -Easier to tune. You don't need the Eagle tool. -Adjustable clutch. -A lot less expensive. -51t. Better gear steps. No 8 tooth gap. M8100 Cons: -Weight. -More force is needed to actuate the paddles. -Need a special tool to replace direct-mount chainrings. -Long derailleur cage is vulnerable to getting hit. -Feels like it has more drag than SRAM. -Microspline costs extra for your rear hub. Some hubs don't have Microspline yet. XO1 Pros: -Lightweight. -Quicker shifting. -Positive shifter paddle feel. The clicks are very apparent and precise. -Less force is needed to actuate the shift paddles. -By now, everyone should know how to tune Eagle. -Chainring replacement is easy. No special tools needed. -Feels like it has less drag than Shimano. XO1 Cons: -Loud if not tuned perfectly and/or not lubed. It's a noisy drivetrain in general. -No double upshift. -Occasionally clunky shifting. Especially in the smaller cogs. -Shifting up or down under power makes loud, scary noises. -Need Eagle tool to tune. -Very expensive. They have their pros and cons. I personally prefer using my M8100 groupset. I bent my XT derailleur a few weeks ago because of a slip and a stone. So I upgraded my derailleur and shifter to M9100 XTR to see how much of an improvement XTR is. I don't think the M9100 derailleur is necessary. But the M9100 shifter makes it so that there's a lot less force needed to actuate the shifter paddles. It also feels more precise. Like the old M9000 XTR shifter. And in all honesty, the 12S XT and XTR are practically neck and neck when it comes to performance. Not like the old days where there was more differentiating the XTR and XT and not just overall weight. The XO1 is a very good and very light drivetrain. Compared to Shimano's 12S offerings, it can feel a little rough around the edges. But it has been very reliable. It shifts quickly but you need to back off power when doing so. You can't go wrong with either. #16 · Oct 10, 2021 You really can't go wrong when you go GripShift on XO! #17 · Oct 10, 2021 I agree with almazing. I MUCH prefer the Sram shifter feel and ergonomics, the derailleur lock is fantastic and the one piece cassette less of a hassle , but overall Shimano is more reliable and precise. #18 · Oct 10, 2021 Speaking from a non-racing perspective, I have always been a strong fan of Shimano at this site. Until I got AXS. Game changer. Best bike related purchase of 2021 for me by far and despite Covid, I bought lots of stuff. Insert Quotes Post Reply
