I haven't seen gameplay of both xens but i've heard that the hl1 xen is bad while the other is an improvised version of it. So i want to know which game would i start first. I also wouldn't mind difficulty but if its not very unfair. It also depends on which is more challenging and fun. So which one would i play first, hl1 xen or bm xen? < > Showing 1-9 of 9 comments poisondeathray View Profile View Posts 30 Dec, 2019 @ 9:31am You should play both. #1 Josedx9 View Profile View Posts 30 Dec, 2019 @ 10:42am I would recommend you to play the Half Life game first, since this way you have a reference on how they improved Xen in Black Mesa. And yes, the Xen of Half Life is ugly and so poorly designed that you do not quite understand how in that world there are so many different species of creatures living together, I say it seems to be a lot of rocks fused with meat floating in nothingness. Of course, it is potentially more difficult than Black Mesa, since there are many more enemies and become more aggressive #2 Soot Leopardus View Profile View Posts 30 Dec, 2019 @ 11:37am Half Life's Xen and Black Mesa's are two very different beasts. The new isn't an improved version so much as it is a complete reimagining. There aren't really any areas where you can say "oh look, this is *place* from *mapname* but better". The closest you might get is near the end of the first chapter when you see what might look something like a familiar area, but even then you end up approaching it in a very different way. They're both worth playing. Those who say Half-Life's version was bad might be oversimplifying... it was still just as good as the rest of the game at what it tried to do, but compared to the rest of the game it didn't try to do very much.Black Mesa's version tries to do a lot more, and to its credit, I think it gets most of it right, though it can feel just a little bit bloated at times. So this game all the way. #4 Soot Leopardus View Profile View Posts 30 Dec, 2019 @ 11:48am Well there is still Blue Shift and Opposing Force which I quite liked. My headcannon is that Race X was an advance force for the Combine in some way. Why, vanilla has it all. Crunchy roachs, long bizarre on a rail level and horrible zen, decent ai, swimming nasty biting fishes and marines that crouch by their own ticking grenade. HL1 is a must play.Besides, After you start playing you don’t even notice the Graphics. #6 Hell's Tits View Profile View Posts 30 Dec, 2019 @ 12:39pm Well, I think unless you want to know how much better BM is compared to HL1 because you haven't played the latter, then I'd say just play BM as it of course HL1 in terms of story line. It all still ends the same, but of course looks so much better in BM so I really don't see the point in playing HL1. Check out screenshots of HL1 if you want to compare, I don't see the point in playing the whole thing, I'm not likely to again now BM is complete. #7 ChraniECV View Profile View Posts 30 Dec, 2019 @ 6:14pm I enjoyed that three headed worm-beast in the blast pit more in the original. I kinda sleepwalked through that on Black Mesa. Fell in the damn gap in the corridor quite a few times, despite knowing what to do. The wall seems to reach out an inch further than the visible wall suggests ;)For me, HL1 was what unreal tried to be, and basically started a whole bunch of different genres. Counterstrike included. As someone who played the game practically on day one, I'd recommend to play vanilla at least once. Preferably before playing black Mesa, it's really hard to go back. But the game is so well done that it just doesn't matter after a while really #8 Soot Leopardus View Profile View Posts 30 Dec, 2019 @ 7:01pm

True. I 'spect the old Half Life hasn't seen the last of me either.Plus there's plenty of good mods for it. #9 < > Showing 1-9 of 9 comments Per page: 1530 50 Black Mesa > General Discussions > Topic Details Date Posted: 30 Dec, 2019 @ 9:25amPosts: 9 Discussions Rules and Guidelines Close
