Design[]

The MCX is noted for its "modularity, firing speed, controllability, and its ease of use". It feeds from standard STANAG magazines for 5.56×45mm NATO and .300 AAC Blackout ammunition, and specially designed STANAG-compatible magazines for 7.62×39mm. The 1st gen MCX and its successor, the MCX VIRTUS, can easily be converted between 5.56×45mm and .300 Blackout by swapping barrels, but require an additional bolt change for 7.62×39mm. A third generation of the MCX called the MCX-SPEAR LT entered production in 2022; this version is optimized for the use of that cartridge.

• MCX Patrol: Full-sized rifle with 16 inch barrel.
• MCX SBR: Carbine version with 6.75 inch, 9 inch, 11.5 inch, or 14.5 inch barrel.
• MCX PSB: Version with a stabilizing brace; same barrel lengths as the SBR.
• MCX LVAW: Variant for military and law enforcement only, with 6.75 inch barrel and thread mount suppressor.
• MCX-MR: Designated marksman rifle variant with 16 inch barrel. It was an unsuccessful contender for the US Army's CSASS (Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System) program.
• MCX VIRTUS Patrol: Second generation version of the MCX, with 16 inch barrel.
• MCX VIRTUS SBR: Carbine version of the VIRTUS with 6.75 inch, 9 inch, 11.5 inch, or 14.5 inch barrel.
• MCX VIRTUS Pistol: Legally a pistol variant of the VIRTUS; same barrel lengths as the SBR.
• MCX VIRTUS TACOPS: Suppressor ready variant of the VIRTUS with 6.75 inch barrel and PCB folding brace.
• MCX Rattler SBR: Compact carbine with PDW upper receiver, with 5.5 inch or 7.75 inch barrel.
• MCX Rattler PSB: Version of the Rattler with 3 position telescoping brace.
• MCX Rattler PCB: Version of the Rattler with PCB folding brace.
• MCX Rattler Canebrake: Suppressor ready variant of the Rattler.
• MCX-SPEAR: Battle rifle (known as "SLX-SPEAR" during early prototype stages) with 9 inch, 13 inch, 16 inch, or 20 inch barrel. In 2022, it was announced as the winner of the US Army's NGSW-R (Next Generation Squad Weapon - Rifle) program, and its designation is "XM7".
• MCX-SPEAR LT: Third generation version of the MCX, with 6.75 inch, 9 inch, 10.5 inch, 11.5 inch, 14.5 inch or 16 inch barrel.
• MCX Rattler LT: Successor to the MCX Rattler, with 6.75 inch barrel (.300 Blackout) or 7.75 inch barrel (5.56×45mm and 7.62×39mm).
• MCX-REGULATOR: Variant with proprietary lower receiver, Magpul SGA stock, and 16 inch barrel.
• MCX Air Rifle: Air rifle feeding from .177 caliber pellets.
• MCX VIRTUS PCP: Air rifle feeding from .22 caliber pellets.
• MCX Rattler Canebrake Air Rifle: Air rifle feeding from .177 caliber pellets.
