The Sigma company’s line-up of lenses is really wide. In spite of that fact you could still find significant gaps there. Undoubtedly their line-up totally lacked classic portrait lenses as Sigma didn’t feature any fast devices with the focal ranges from 70 to 135 mm. It is really strange – enough to see how popular are the 1.8/85 class lenses among amateurs and faster 85 mm devices or 100-135 mm instruments among half-professionals and professionals.

Finally Sigma decided to catch up. What’s interesting they didn’t want to compete in the lower segment of the market, where they could have presented a 1.8/85 model, but they decided to play more ambitiously, introducing the Sigma 85 mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM which is not the cheapest after all. They followed up a very successful launch of the Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM which, although a bit more expensive than its brand-name competitors, was so well-turned-out that it sold very well nevertheless. After such an experience Sigma didn’t have any scruples launching the 1.4/85 model for the price of 900 $. At first glance it might seem a lot but, on the other hand, the price is still significantly lower than that of its rivals. If the properties of the 85 mm model are similar to those of the 50 mm device the situation of the tested lens will be even better because this time the new Sigma costs distinctly less than its competitors, not as much as them or higher.
