The USMC Deuce was originally designed as a heavy-lift assault helicopter capable of delivering 36 combat troops or equipment (up to two Jeeps or field artillery) from ship to shore. It was quickly adapted by the Army which purchased almost twice as many as the Marines. During its early testing it set both speed and weight lifting records for helicopters. Once in service, it was also used to recover small aircraft and other helicopters by both the Army and Marines in Vietnam. Many of its features, including its 72 foot main rotor blades, were used as the successful basis of its replacement, the CH-53, which is still in use today.   Reviewed in the United States on 9 November 2018Verified Purchase Pretty standard layout for a NF series. The stand-out areas for this volume include civil operations, more color pictures than is the norm, profiles on the back cover, along with coverage of Army ops. The biggest difference on this volume is the operations, you still have the standard dry unit histories, however, the author has incorporated oral histories of both the maintenance personnel and aircrew.Please note that even by NF standards the technical descriptions are excellent. Modelers should be careful as some of the instrument panel photos appear to be from later surplus civilian operators. There is also a chapter on the S-60 which will provide the reader with a evolutionary link to the CH-54, Erickson Skycrane, and future Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM) with the RH-53D and MH-53E helicopters. Even the experimental ASW version gets a bit of coverage as well as a British connection that will interest a few readers.Overall, an excellent buy and highly recommended for modelers, historians, or anyone with an interest in rotary wing ops by USA and USMC.
