Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Sony A7S III and Panasonic GH5S side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Sony A7S III has external dimensions of 129 x 97 x 81 mm (5.08 x 3.82 x 3.19″) and weighs 699 g (1.54 lb / 24.66 oz) (including batteries). Panasonic GH5S has external dimensions of 139 x 98 x 87 mm (5.47 x 3.86 x 3.43″) and weighs 660 g (1.46 lb / 23.28 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Sony A7S III and the Panasonic GH5S. Sony A7S III is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 10mm narrower, 1mm shorter and 6mm thinner than Panasonic GH5S.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Panasonic GH5S is 39g lighter than the Sony A7S III but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since Sony A7S III has a Full frame sensor and Panasonic GH5S has a smaller Four Thirds sensor, Panasonic GH5S's lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will generally be lighter and smaller than the Sony A7S III lenses.

Both the A7S III and the GH5S have weather sealings in their bodies, making them resistant to water and dust.

LCD Screen Size and Features

Panasonic GH5S's 3.20" LCD screen is slightly larger than Sony A7S III's 3″ screen.

Sony A7S III has a 12.0MP Full frame (35.6 x 23.8 mm ) sized BSI-CMOS sensor and features Bionz XR processor. On the other hand, Panasonic GH5S has a 10.0MP Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine 10 processor.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Panasonic GH5S's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the A7S III and GH5S sensor size comparison.

Sony A7S III vs Panasonic GH5S Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Sony A7S III and Panasonic GH5S Cameras

As seen above, Sony A7S III has a 3.8x Larger sensor area than Panasonic GH5S. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Sony A7S III has an advantage over the Panasonic GH5S. There are 332 lenses for the Sony A7S III's Sony E mount, but on the other hand, there are only 131 lenses for the Panasonic GH5S's Micro Four Thirds lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Sony A7S III has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization (IS) which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. A7S III's built-in Image stabilization system is effective for compensating vibration up to 5.5-stops according to CIPA standards. On the other hand, Panasonic GH5S doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 39 lenses for Micro Four Thirds mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
