Mid-range smartphone cameras are geared to see an uptick in quality. While the past year has seen the advent of 50 MP sensors in that segment of the market, most mid-rangers have stuck to Samsung's JN1 and GN5 so far, with the rest featuring older 48 MP and 64 MP sensor. That looks set to change soon, however.

According to leaker Digital Chat Station, Sony is working on a new CMOS sensor in the IMX800 series. This sensor will be Sony's first 100 MP smartphone camera sensor, as the company generally preferred to focus on lower-res sensors before now. The source claims this sensor will be designed for mid-range phones, and we expect it to be a direct rival to Samsung's HM2 which has seen use on phones like the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G and Redmi K50 Pro. In addition to that, Sony reportedly also has a new large sensor lined up for the IMX900 series.

Unwilling to be left behind, Samsung is also said to be working on a new sensor. This upcoming sensor is touted to be incredibly large—even bigger than the 1/1.12-inch ISOCELL GN2 on the Mi 11 Ultra. That should see it within the 1-inch range, perhaps a tad smaller than the sensor on the Sony Xperia Pro-I.

Buy the Xiaomi 11T Pro 5G on Amazon.
