I posted earlier about a trying decide between the two formats. I built up an HSS Strat pickguard and would have sworn that is what I'd prefer. I discovered earlier with Teles I like low output single coils with a pedal boost of some sort for gainier tones.. Same with the Strat I guess. I've always had a Clapton at the house and this is the first conventional Strat in a while. I swapped the two guards in an out a couple of time...SSS all the way for me. I have an LP and another humbucker guitar so I have those tones covered anyway. A

Yep, found I had I tried all along. Fender 57/62s are perfect.. that's what I had in it originally. Had to try the HSS thing though. B

If you already have some HB guitars you like, that you wanna keep, it would be the exceptional HSS pickguard on Strat that would wet your whistle. TheSpricket

It's a much more usable sound. And I never liked the sound of a strat bridge single coil. Even with the bucker you still get a great quack from position 2. I recall reading (maybe here) a strat bridge pickup is mostly for show, hahaha. I mostly live on the neck pickup on the strat anyway. That's where the magic is for me. T

I would say have both !........nice vintage style SSS and a SSH or HSH. I have a nice 72 reissue Strat that sounds and plays like a dream but I love humbuckers, I took this $200 Strat and put an Invader bridge but the invader was too much for the single so what I did is put some low output humbuckers for bridge and neck and I had a Bare Knuckle that is 6.55 and put it in middle position . So that crappy thing now plays and sounds awesome ! I found a set of Gotoh VH-1 for $80 and and don't regret ,..........they deliver !! Beautiful crunch and the fact that they are not too hot,.they love fuzz and I do to ! lkft

The single coil in the Strat bridge position is just too bright and harsh sounding for my tastes and for the music we play which is eighties rock. The HB there is more usable to me. Here's mine. I have an air zone in the HSS setup. I think a PAF would be better. One of my other guitars is a old Electra Workingman. It's shaped like a LP but is all Fender in spec, ash body, maple neck and 25.5 scale length. Sounds like a Fender with buckers. GGinMP

Of course good pickups and the proper wiring. I have my G&L with the PTB system which I love, and my Dano has the EJ mod with a tone knob switched from middle to bridge. A humbucker in a Strat just doesn't do it for me. monty

Hot Rails, Tone Zone S, etc, etc...they always come up short when compared to the side by side, full-sized bucker. For me, it's got to be HSS if it's going to be a Strat keeper. ferrinbonn

I stupidly never turned my tone down for years and always found my bridge too shrill. Finally wizened up and found some great single coil bridge tones by going down to 7 or 8 on the tone knob. It was my first guitar, but these days I can't help feeling I should have a S in there. It's my only guitar with a S in the neck and it sounds unique among my guitars. My only real issue with single coils is the noise. I get the impression that you can't really have a noiseless single coil without losing that unique sound. And I get quite a lot of noise in my place with overhead power cables, capacitors, wifi router and multiple computers. Someday I will go SSS though. jazzwannabe

Lol! I know, I know...it's an acquired taste. And how about that headstock! Lol! All joking aside this the most ass-kickingest guitar in my lineup by a pretty large margin! M

Agreed, I have my bridge pickup to a tone control... even with a humbucker.
