Overview[]

It is a gigantic red staff that Sun Wukong summons from the sky to crush his target.[1]

Usage[]

여의봉 is translated as Magical Staff by LINE Webtoon.

여 is the Korean form of the hanja 如 and means "complaint". 의 is the Korean form of the hanja 意 which means "thought; idea; opinion; mind" or "heart; soul; conscience". 봉 is the Korean form of the hanja 棒 which means "stick, staff; pole; rod".

여의봉 (如意棒) literally means Compliant Rod or more correctly, Staff That Obeys One's Will.

여의봉 (pronounced "yeouibong") is the short form of 여의금고봉 (pronunced "yeoui geumgobong") used by Koreans. 여의금고봉 is the Korean form of the hanja 如意金箍棒 (pinyin: Rúyì Jīngū Bàng). The short for '여의금고봉' in Chinese is '금고봉' (Romaja: geumgobong). 如意金箍棒 is translated as "The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod", Magic Golden-Clasped Rod” or “Ideal Golden-bound Cudgel. It is usually just called Ruyi Jingu Bang in popular culture. It is also called Ruyi Bang or Jingu Bang.

Note: There are multiple characters in Chinese that share the meaning of object that is long and thin, just as there are multiple words that means the same thing in English like: stick/Cudgel/rod/staff (棍/棒/杆/杖)

Notes & Trivia[]

• Ruyi Jingu Bang is the poetic name of a magical staff wielded by the immortal monkey Sun Wukong in the 16th-century classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Anthony Yu translates the name simply as "The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod," while W.J.F. Jenner translates it as the "As-You-Will Gold-Banded Cudgel".
• Sun Wukong summoned it by saying 'sohwan - Yeooibong' (korean: 소환 - 여의봉). It is not clear if he can wield it directly as a weapon or only summon it to attack.

Mythology[]

The staff first appears in the third chapter when the Monkey King goes to the underwater kingdom of Ao Guang, the Dragon King of the East Sea, looking for a magic weapon to match his strength and skill. When all of the traditional magic weapons—swords, spears, and halberds weighing thousands of pounds each—fail to meet his standards, the dragon queen suggests to her husband that they give Sun a useless iron pillar taking up space in their treasury. She claims that the ancient shaft had started producing heavenly light days prior and suggests that the monkey is fated to own it. The novel never explains how the pillar was made, only that it was originally used by Yu the Great to measure the depths of the world flood during times immemorial.[2]

The staff is initially described as a pillar of black iron twenty feet in height and the width of a barrel. It is only when Monkey lifts it and suggests that a smaller size would be more manageable that the staff complies with his wishes and shrinks. After this, it is only a little taller than him, and as thick as a rice bowl. This is when Sun sees that the weapon is banded with a gold ring on each end, as well as the inscription along the body reading "The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod. Weight: thirteen thousand five hundred [catties]" (如意金箍棒重一萬三千五百斤). The inscription indicates that the staff follows the commands of its owner, shrinking or growing to his whim, make copies of itself, and that it is immensely heavy, weighing 17,550 lbs (7,960 kg).[2]

When not in use, Monkey shrinks it down to the size of a needle and keeps it tucked behind his ear.[2]

Ruyi Jingu Bang is Sun Wukong's primary weapon, originally an iron rod used to measure the depth of the sea. The Rúyì Jīn Gū Bàng was given to him by Ào Guǎng. The staff weighs 13,500 jin (8.1 tons), but Wùkōng can lift it easily and change it to any size. He usually shrinks it to the size of a sewing needle and puts it behind his ear when he is not using it.

Popular Culture[]

The weapon is used by other Webtoon characters influenced by Sun Wukong.

The staff influenced the weapon used by Son Goku (himself based on Sun Wukong), the main character of the Dragon Ball franchise. It is named "Nyoi Bo," the Japanese transliteration of Ruyi Bang (Chinese: 如意棒; literally: 'Compliant Rod'), and is commonly called "Power Pole" in English-language media. The staff is given to him as a child by his adoptive grandfather Son Gohan, a human who takes him in and teaches him martial arts.

In the anime and manga Naruto, the character Enma, who is based on Sun Wukong, is able to transform into a multiplying and size-shifting staff

In the Korean webtoon God of High School, the protagonist Mori Jin, who is based on Sun Wukong, wields Ruyi Jingu Bang.
