Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave: Explore The Biggest Cave In Halong Bay

The cave is located on Bo Hon Island, alongside another well-known Halong cave, Trinh Nu Cave. Visitors arriving by boat must navigate a flight of 50 stairs to reach the entrance, situated approximately 25 meters above sea level. Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave, is made up of two distinct chambers; the first chamber, referred to as the “Waiting Room,” is expansive and adorned with stalagmites and stalactites, illuminated by vibrant multicolored lights that enhance its natural beauty.

To access the second chamber, visitors must traverse a narrow passageway. This chamber, also known as the “Serene Castle,” boasts a grand atmosphere with a soaring ceiling and numerous fascinating rock formations, which locals liken to various animal shapes.

One notable rock formation resembles a horse holding a sword and is linked to the legend of Thanh Giong (God Gióng). According to folklore, Thanh Giong defended the local inhabitants by vanquishing aggressors, demons, and evil spirits. Upon completing his mission, he ascended to the heavens, leaving behind a stone horse and sword to safeguard the area from future threats.

How to Visit Sung Sot Cave

There are two popular methods to visit Sung Sot Cave:

Option 1:

For travelers with limited time who wish to include Sung Sot Cave in their itinerary, renting a canoe is the best choice. High-speed canoes are commonly available at Tuan Chau and Hon Gai piers, with typical rental fees starting at around 1,200,000 VND (approximately $50) per hour for a canoe accommodating 4 to 8 passengers.

Option 2:

A more economical option is participating in a 6-hour day boat tour.

This tour, which includes Sung Sot Cave, typically departs from Tuan Chau International Port, covering stops at Soi Sim Island, Titop Island, Sung Sot Cave, Bo Nau Cave, Luon Cave, Fairy Lake Cave, and Trinh Nu Cave. Activities include cave exploration, swimming, sailing, and kayaking.

Ticket Price: Entry tickets can be purchased at Tuan Chau International Port for 290,000 VND per person. Additionally, a boat rental fee of 200,000 VND applies, and optional lunch costs between 150,000 VND and 250,000 VND. The total cost ranges from 640,000 VND to 740,000 VND per person.

Discount Policy:

  • Children under 1.2 meters tall or aged 7 and under are free of charge.
  • Children aged 7 to 16 receive a 20% discount on ticket prices.
  • Individuals over 60 years of age qualify for a 50% discount on ticket prices.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time for Vietnamese locals to explore Halong Bay spans from April to October. However, the winter months of October to December tend to attract a larger number of international tourists. This season features lower humidity and dry weather conditions.

What to Pack

Visitors are advised to wear lightweight clothing, carry a few sweaters for cooler temperatures, and wear comfortable footwear. Additionally, insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended as you will spend considerable time outdoors and inside the caves.
