Aightbror Heyhey! I had a quick question and was wondering if its possible to simply swap a GTI engine into a Golf Variant (thats what they are called in Europe) / Sportwagen (i believe these are the same) My engine died and since i've owned it for a while I'm not sure i want to go back to a basic engine and might want to spice it up to a GTI engine and make it a OEM+ sort of GTI that VW never made. I'm probably unique in this aspect since everyone will mention "Why dont you just buy a GTI", it's because i want the practicality of my Golf Variant and its become my love :). Also,I know we have the Golf Variant R in Europe but since i got this car for cheap It would be cheaper for me to swap in another (or the same) engine instead of selling and buying an R variant After googling a bit i found that i need: -Full Engine with wiring -Gearbox -ECU -(maybe) new gauge cluster (with MIB2 and virtual cockpit if i get a 7.5 engine since it would be easier to code into VCDS) Other than that i believe it should be a straight swap right? Let me know what you think and I'd love to hear it. Here is a pic of how i want to make it look in the end when its got a GTI engine :p Wheel Tire Car Vehicle Grille #1 · Dec 14, 2021 Heyhey! There's a thread here, somewhere, and more at golfmk7 where a guy has swapped in an R engine to a GSW... Talks about all the technical details- custom fixes to mounting, ecu coding, etc. That might be a good start to get a sense of breadth of changes needed for your project. Have fun! Post pics as you go! #3 · Dec 14, 2021

Sounds ambitious but doable if you can wrench and have time and money and patience. Have fun! Post pics as you go! Click to expand...
1 Reply #5 · Dec 14, 2021 This should not be an issue to swap in that engine as people are swapping in RS3 engines into Golf r's and other similar sized cars. An Audi engine in that car would be amazing but a Golf R would be a close second. #6 · Dec 14, 2021 Thats true ye! DAZA is a bit expensive right now tho, the engine alone is about 8K euros here. But since its FWD as it stands it would be quite the hassle and cost to swap in the 4motion system aswell, hence the GTI swap instead of R (even tho i might aswell throw on the IS38 on there when the engine is out anyway) 0 Reply #7 · Dec 15, 2021 Your reasoning for this motor swap is solid. As far as VW never offering a GTI wagen, well they kind of did in 2009 with the Jetta Sportwagen (at least in North American markets) that was available with the same motor and transmission as the GTI of that same year. I agree in that the mk7 wagen should have been offered with the GTI motor. VAG does offer a SEAT version of the front wheel drive mk7 GSW with the R motor and IS38 turbo in Europe so it's possible. #10 · Dec 15, 2021 Too bad we dont have the Jetta Sportwagen here :(. Okay good to know there is atleast some hope to swap it without too much hassle! :) 0 Reply #8 · Dec 15, 2021 biggest thing people have done to make it true "plug and play" is taking an entire doner car (GTI in you case) and it's entire wiring harness and sliding it into the wagon. With component protection unless you want to deal with ODIS and coding it's almost easier to swap the entire electronics suite into the wagon. At the end every single can bus module will think it's a GTI, only it'll have a couple extra inches out back. #9 · Dec 15, 2021

Ye I'm still looking to see if it would be cheaper to find a wrecked GTI for parts (they are about 7-8K as far as i can find (with rear end damage)) or try and see if i can get parts separately and have it programmed. I'll have to have a quick look around to the exact parts list I'd need so I can see what would be the cheaper/easier option for me. I'm not in a rush so i can just browse and see what would be best. Thanks! :D 0 Reply #11 · Dec 16, 2021 the Jetta sportwagen was the golf sportwagen in the rest of the world, just named jetta in the US for us plebs. Canada mk6 sportwagen was also named a Golf, not jetta. #12 · Aug 23, 2022
