The majority of students coming to the school are complete beginners and any of the below courses are perfect for complete beginners through to more advanced students. Our only advice is, if you already have some experience, I wouldn’t go for the group classes as the group classes are more suited to beginners. Our advice, go with what resonates most with you - your gut / intuition.

A Message from Sydney DJ School Owner, Nikki Carvell

When I first stepped into the world of DJing — at the age of 43 — I had no idea where to begin. I came across Sydney DJ School and was lucky enough to learn from its founder, Andrew Duffield. The course completely blew me away. I went from “I just want to play in my living room” to “How do I get my first gig?” within just four lessons.

When the opportunity came up to take over the school in 2021, it was a no-brainer — and I haven’t looked back since.

I’ve been embedded in the dance music scene since my teens, working in clubs in the UK throughout the '90s and promoting club and festival events as part of various street teams. That early experience, combined with studying music at theatre arts school, gave me a deep foundation — and now, decades later, I’m passionate about passing that knowledge on.

My own DJ journey has been a wild ride — from supporting international DJs here in Australia to playing regularly in Ibiza and running events that represent global dance brands. I now produce my own music and run my own label, Dare To Records. What started as a creative outlet has become a full-blown passion — and more than that, a purpose.

Creating a space where people can learn, grow, and share their love for dance music is incredibly rewarding. That’s what this course is about.

And it’s not just about learning how to mix tracks. We’ll show you what it really takes to break into the scene — how to approach venues, how to get booked, and how to build unstoppable momentum. You’ll learn how to show up like a pro, connect with crowds, and create unforgettable moments on the dancefloor.

Do I need DJ equipment?

The majority of people that do the in person training (one on ones and group classes) do not own equipment before starting the course and are usually doing the course to see if DJING resonates with them, at which point we can give them advice on the best gear for their needs and their budget. However if you are considering the online course and don’t have gear yet, our advice would be, don’t wait till you have gear to start the course as there is plenty you can do without gear and the more prepared you are before hitting the decks, the quicker it will all come together.

The most common mistake people make is waiting to get DJ gear before staring the course and then when they start to play, without any preparation or understand of how it all works, they get discouraged as they have no idea what they are doing and they develop bad habits that will need to be unlearnt. We honesty suggest that you start the course first, as there is loads you can do on your computer before hitting the decks, and then when you do get equipment you will be surprised how fast you pick it up and how quickly you build confidence.

Can I buy DJ equipment from the school?

We work for Pioneer and we can get wholesale prices on all Pioneer equipment (BTW: Pioneer is what you’ll find in all nightclubs). If you do not own DJ equipment yet our advice would be: sign up and get a feel for the gear at the school and then we can give you personalised advice for your needs and your budget and get gear in your hands for a fraction of what you’d pay in shops. BTW - this is an open invitation: you can do the course and then save for gear and when you are ready we’ll organise it for you. Too easy!!.

Which genre of music do you specialise in?

When doing one on ones in Sydney the first question we ask our students is “what genre do they wish to learn on” and their answers always fall into 3 main categories.

1. Deeper Kinds of House (suitable for people into): Tech House, Deep House, Techno, Minimal Tech, Progressive House and Nu Disco)
2. Heavier Styles of Dance (suitable for people into): EDM, Big Room, Electro House, Bounce, Hardstyle, Drum and Bass, Trap and Dubstep)
3. Vocal Driven Music (suitable for people into): Hip Hip, RNB, Pop, Rock / any genre where there is singing the whole way through

For this reason after we have nailed the foundations (with exercises featuring all of the above), we have advanced courses for each of the above genres. This means it doesn’t matter what genre you're into, we have you covered. For instance there are different ways to mix the main genres and we will teach you all those ways so by the courses end you’ll be able to play any genre on any gear - if you choose. You can opt to only focus on your preferred genre if you have no interest in pop, and vice versa. That’s where we go above and beyond, as we have made genre specific exercises that will get you where you need to be using the music you love or gravitate towards.

As soon as you pay you will be sent (via email) a confirmation of your booking and a log in for all the online bonus content to assure you get the most from the course (this is yours for life). If you purchased in person training (one on one or group classes) you will also be sent ‘Getting Started’ info with all the details of our classes (times, dates, address, what you need etc etc). Can I hire a studio to practise?

×

Our training rooms are decked out with the latest Pioneer Club Standard Equipment (the equipment you would find in nightclubs). You can either get personal practise time free with the courses (see below), or you can hire out the rooms.

For students of Sydney DJ School Courses

One on ones and weekend intensives: 4 x additional free practise sessions between course commencement and your live show.

Online Course: 1 x free practise sessions, but option to upgrade for casual pop ins for $50.

Non students (people wishing to hire out rooms for personal practise)

Casual: 3 hour block for $60

We are at the school between 9am - 9pm. To arrange personal practise time, please contact the school.
