Clay from Nui Nua area (Co Dinh valley, Thanh Hoa province) characterized by mainly Fesmectite was used to study short-term alteration in high-alkaline solutions of 1M NaOH and KOH. Starting material and treated products were carried out by XRD, FT-IR, and TEM-EDX methods to identify changes in structure and chemical composition of smectite particles. The yielded results all showed changes in the structure of Nui Nua Fe-smectite: from Ca-dominating interlayer in the starting material into Na-dominating or K-dominating interlayer in the products. Therefore, a process of ion exchange has happened. Besides, dissolution of a part of Fe-smectite particles also worked in such high-alkaline solution. Both processes resulted in illitization and consequently, the expandability and self-sealing ability of the clay reduced. With this finding, the isolation capacity of the Nui Nua clay for radioactive is limited in such high-alkaline solution.
