TechPowerUp is Hiring a Power Supply (PSU) Reviewer
Pinned by btarunr Nov 8th, 2024 03:04 Discuss (110 Comments) TPU is looking to hire a PC enthusiast or professional to review PC power supplies (PSUs) part-time. Our current reviewer suvirintojas put out some great work with us since 2023, but has changes in his life that require his attention. We thank him for the wonderful work and hope we find a replacement of equal caliber. TechPowerUp PSU reviews tend to be highly technical, as we dive into the finer aspects of the PSU's switching performance, and quality of electrical output across various voltage domains. We also focus on noise levels and efficiency. The PSU industry is in a state of transition toward newer standards such as ATX 3.1, PCIe Gen 5 CEM, and perhaps even ATX12VO, which means we'll never run out of new PSUs to review for at least the next few years. This is where you step in—we are looking for a PSU reviewer with fairly high availability for a significant output of reviews. We can help arrange as many PSU samples as you can handle.

AMD's Future Ryzen SoCs May Feature New Chip-Stacking Technology
by Nomad76 Saturday, 05:41 Discuss (32 Comments) AMD has recently filed a patent revealing plans to implement "multi-chip stacking" in future Ryzen SoCs, as Wccftech reports, quoting a post on X from @coreteks: "New patent from AMD shows how future Zen SoCs could look. Basically a novel packaging design that enables compact chip stacking and interconnection by having them partially overlap, as in this figure. The dotted line is a larger die stacked on top of those smaller ones". The patent details a new approach where smaller chiplets partially overlap with a larger die, creating space for additional components and functions on the same die. This strategy aims to improve the efficiency of the contact area, thus making room for higher core counts, larger caches, and increased memory bandwidth within the same die size. The proposed stacking will reduce the physical distance between components through overlapping chiplets, thus minimizing interconnect latency and achieving faster communication between different chip parts. The design will also improve power management, as the segregated chiplets allow for better control of each unit through power gating. Even if long-time rival Intel has lost some of its momentum (and market share) this year, AMD's chance to push ahead with its intention to become number one in the market is to continue to innovate. In the same way that its 3D V-Cache technology made the X3D processor lineup so successful, this chip stacking approach could play a major role in future AMD Ryzen SoCs. It seems that AMD is committed to moving away from the monolithic design era and taking the road of multi-chiplet; however, it can be a long wait until (and if) this chip stacking will complete the journey from patents to design, production, and final product.

AOOSTAR N1 Pro Mini PC Launched with Impressively Compact Chassis and Dual 2.5G Ethernet
by GGforever Saturday, 01:54 Discuss (12 Comments) Right now, all eyes are on the ever-so-compact Mac Mini with the M4 SoC. But that hardly stops other brands from coming out with Mini/SFF PCs with even tinier form factors, and AOOSTAR is no stranger to that trend. The brand's latest offering, the N1 Pro, rocks a shockingly compact chassis, coming in at just 0.33 liters and weighing just over 300 grams. The system is clearly extremely compact, and can be hauled around pretty easily with very little effort. That said, the system's compactness comes with a major drawback: performance.

Intel Could Manufacture Apple's Next-Generation A20 SoC for iPhone
by AleksandarK Saturday, 00:39 Discuss (37 Comments) Apple is reportedly considering diversifying its chip manufacturing strategy with a new silicon manufacturer: Intel. While the upcoming iPhone 17 series, expected next year, will likely feature A19 chips produced by TSMC, a recent rumor from Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital hints at a potential switch to Intel for the A20 chipsets powering the 2026 iPhone 18 series. The A18 and A18 Pro chipsets debuted alongside the iPhone 16 series in September 2024, manufactured using TSMC's N3E node. Apple's A19 chips are expected to upgrade to TSMC's N3P node. According to the source, Apple is seeking an Intel 20A node. However, since the A20 node is canceled in favor of 18A, Apple could be an Intel Foundry customer for either 18A or 14A nodes. Despite the buzz, skepticism persists. Intel has historically struggled with process node transitions and even outsourced production of its Arrow Lake CPUs to TSMC, raising questions about its readiness to deliver on Apple's demands. On the other hand, alternative reports suggest Apple might stick with TSMC's yet-unnamed 2 nm node for the A20, maintaining continuity in its supply chain. As the iPhone 18 series remains two years away, much can change. For now, we are left speculating whether this rumored collaboration with Intel represents a new chapter in Apple's chipset innovation or just a rumor with little substance. If the US government mandates more domestic production, chip designers could be looking at some of the more local manufacturing options, like Intel does on US soil. That could force Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, and Qualcomm to look into Intel's offerings.

Chieftec Visio Review
Review Cases The Chieftec Visio is a super compact dual-chamber chassis which can still accept a full size ATX or BTF motherboard. With its full fan load-out of six units and large radiator support in the ceiling, it could be a cool option to stuff all that into such a small chassis. Especially at the attractive price point, clearly aiming the Visio at first-time and budget minded builders. Read Review
NVIDIA Warns: GeForce RTX 40-Series GPUs Could be in Shortage in Q4
by AleksandarK Friday, 18:17 Discuss (63 Comments) During NVIDIA's recent Q3 earnings call, CFO Colette Kress cautioned about potential GPU supply constraints in the fourth quarter despite strong gaming sector performance. The gaming division posted impressive results, with $3.2 billion in revenue, representing a 15% increase from the previous year. However, Kress indicated that fourth-quarter gaming revenue might see a decline due to supply limitations, though she reassured that supply should stabilize in early 2025. The company is scaling back RTX 40-series production as it prepares for the anticipated launch of its next-generation Blackwell architecture, which is expected to debut at CES 2025. The RTX 50-series GPU lineup, particularly the flagship RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 models, is rumored to be unveiled during the January event. "Gaming, although sell-through was strong in Q3, we expect fourth-quarter revenue to decline sequentially due to supply constraints." For consumers, this could mean limited availability and higher prices for gaming GPUs during the holiday shopping season. The shortage is expected to primarily affect RTX 40-series cards, with a particular impact on laptop GPU availability. However, NVIDIA plans to continue producing select RTX 40 mobile chips alongside the upcoming RTX 50 series, suggesting a slow transition between generations. The holiday season is upon us, so this shortage of current-gen models could cost the company some additional customers, as the customer spending usually holds until holidays and holiday discounts.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Specs Leak: Same Die as RTX 5080, 300 W TDP
by AleksandarK Friday, 18:00 Discuss (76 Comments) Recent leaks have unveiled specifications for NVIDIA's upcoming RTX 5070 Ti graphics card, suggesting an increase in power consumption. According to industry leaker Kopite7kimi, the RTX 5070 Ti will feature 8,960 CUDA cores and operate at a 300 W TDP. In a departure from previous generations, the RTX 5070 Ti will reportedly share the same GB203 die with its higher-tier sibling, the RTX 5080. This architectural decision differs from the RTX 40-series lineup, where the 4070 Ti and 4080 utilized different dies (AD104 and AD103, respectively). This shared die approach could potentially keep NVIDIA's manufacturing costs lower. Performance-wise, the RTX 5070 Ti shows promising improvements over its predecessor. The leaked specifications indicate a 16% increase in CUDA cores compared to the RTX 4070 Ti, though this advantage shrinks to 6% when measured against the RTX 4070 Ti Super. Power consumption sees a modest 5% increase to 300 W, suggesting improved efficiency despite the enhanced capabilities. Memory configurations remain unconfirmed, but speculations about the card indicate that it could feature 16 GB of memory on a 256-bit interface, distinguishing it from the RTX 5080's rumored 24 GB configuration. The positioning across the 50-series GPU stack of this RTX 5070 Ti appears carefully calculated, with its 8,960 CUDA cores sitting approximately 20% below the RTX 5080's 10,752 cores. This larger performance gap between tiers contrasts with the previous generation's approach, potentially indicating a more defined product hierarchy in the Blackwell lineup. NVIDIA is expected to unveil its Blackwell gaming graphics cards at CES 2025, with the RTX 5090, 5080, and 5070 series leading the announcement.

Gigabyte Unveils New 4K and 1440p QD-OLED Gaming Monitors
by GGforever Friday, 01:19 Discuss (7 Comments) Gigabyte has launched a couple of new QD-OLED monitors in 27- and 32-inch flavors. Although targeted primarily at the gaming crowd, these new monitors do not bear the AORUS branding. The 27-inch variant has been dubbed the MO27Q2, and rocks a 1440p panel with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. At 109 PPI, the monitor is likely best suited for content consumption rather than creation, although the claimed 99% DCI-P3 coverage and maximum HDR brightness of 1,000 nits (3% APL) might suggest otherwise. Being an OLED, the response times are exceptionally fast, at 0.03 ms G2G.

"Jaguar Shores" is Intel's Successor to "Falcon Shores" Accelerator for AI and HPC
by AleksandarK Thursday, 14:21 Discuss (8 Comments) Intel has prepared "Jaguar Shores," its "next-next" generation AI and HPC accelerator, successor to its upcoming "Falcon Shores" GPU. Revealed during a technical workshop at the SC2024 conference, the chip was unveiled by Intel's Habana Labs division, albeit unintentionally. This announcement positions Jaguar Shores as the successor to Falcon Shores, which is scheduled to launch next year. While details about Jaguar Shores remain sparse, its designation suggests it could be a general-purpose GPU (GPGPU) aimed at both AI training, inferencing, and HPC tasks. Intel's strategy aligns with its push to incorporate advanced manufacturing nodes, such as the 18A process featuring RibbonFET and backside power delivery, which promise significant efficiency gains, so we can expect to see upcoming AI accelerators incorporating these technologies. Intel's AI chip lineup has faced numerous challenges, including shifting plans for Falcon Shores, which has transitioned from a CPU-GPU hybrid to a standalone GPU, and cancellation of Ponte Vecchio. Despite financial constraints and job cuts, Intel has maintained its focus on developing cutting-edge AI solutions. "We continuously evaluate our roadmap to ensure it aligns with the evolving needs of our customers. While we don't have any new updates to share, we are committed to providing superior enterprise AI solutions across our CPU and accelerator/GPU portfolio." an Intel spokesperson stated. The announcement of Jaguar Shores shows Intel's determination to remain competitive. However, the company faces steep competition. NVIDIA and AMD continue to set benchmarks with performant designs, while Intel has struggled to capture a significant share of the AI training market. The company's Gaudi lineup ends with third generation, and Gaudi IP will get integrated into Falcon Shores.

Qualcomm Bypasses "Oryon 2" for More Powerful Third-Gen AI PC Chips
by AleksandarK Thursday, 01:28 Discuss (10 Comments) At its recent Investor Day, Qualcomm talked about the third generation of its "Oryon" CPU cores, completely disregarding the second-generation Oryon cores for its AI PC project. The company projects these processors will debut in 2025, targeting devices priced as low as $600 to broaden its market presence. Qualcomm hopes to capture 30-50% of the serviceable addressable market (SAM) for non-x86 AI notebooks by 2029, a significant extension from its earlier, more ambitious 2027 target. Qualcomm's Oryon 3 CPUs will succeed the Snapdragon X Plus chips and are expected to deliver substantial performance and efficiency improvements. While no performance hints were dropped for the third-gen, the second-gen Oryon cores receive about a 30% boost in processing power and 57% greater efficiency compared to the first-generation Oryon chips. This indirectly indicates that Oryon 3 will record an even higher performance jump. However, the Oryon 2 generation will skip the PC segment, appearing instead in Snapdragon 8 Elite smartphones. Despite these advancements, the road to higher market share is fraught with challenges. Qualcomm faces competition from potential entrants like MediaTek and NVIDIA, both expected to join the non-x86 notebook market by 2025. Furthermore, the company's revenue projections for the PC segment—$4 billion annually by 2029—pale compared to Intel's $29 billion in PC chip sales in 2023, highlighting the scale of competition in this space. Qualcomm's strategy also includes diversifying its revenue streams beyond PCs. By 2029, it targets $8 billion in automotive chip sales, $4 billion in industrial applications, and $2 billion from VR products. With competition in the Arm-based AI PCs heating up, companies must increase performance dramatically to get a head start.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Dives into Long Loading Times and Negative Reviews
by AleksandarK Wednesday, 20:28 Discuss (29 Comments) Microsoft's latest Flight Simulator 2024 just launched, and it already appears to be riddled with problems. When internally testing, we ran into some issues regarding long loading times and eventual errors without getting to the game. Additionally, many others confirmed that they were experiencing problems. Launched on 08:00 am PT on November 19, the simulator has faced widespread server infrastructure issues affecting player access. CEO of Asobo, maker of this Flight Simulator franchise, Sebastian Wloch, has released a public statement via video addressing the widespread technical issues that plagued their latest game release. According to Wloch, while pre-launch testing had successfully simulated concurrent player counts of 200,000 users, the actual launch revealed critical weaknesses in the database cache system that weren't apparent during testing. Additionally, the negative reviews stemming from these issues have piled up. On Steam, the game currently has 2,865 reviews, only 500 of which are positive. The remaining 2,000+ are overwhelmingly negative, with many users not being satisfied with the gameplay and quality of the release. The game's infrastructure is powered by Microsoft's Azure cloud, which is also not good marketing for Microsoft as the Azure platforms should signal better infrastructure scaling and stability. While these issues should be cleared in the long run, the short-term consequences are turning the launch into a colossal failure, as gamers expected more from this release. Lastly, the alpha version of the game was notorious for the massive internet bandwidth hog, causing up to 180 Mbit/s load.

AMD Custom Makes CPUs for Azure: 88 "Zen 4" Cores and HBM3 Memory
by AleksandarK Wednesday, 18:46 Discuss (19 Comments) Microsoft has announced its new Azure HBv5 virtual machines, featuring unique custom hardware made by AMD. CEO Satya Nadella made the announcement during Microsoft Ignite, introducing a custom-designed AMD processor solution that achieves remarkable performance metrics. The new HBv5 virtual machines deliver an extraordinary 6.9 TB/s of memory bandwidth, utilizing four specialized AMD processors equipped with HBM3 technology. This represents an eightfold improvement over existing cloud alternatives and a staggering 20-fold increase compared to previous Azure HBv3 configurations. Each HBv5 virtual machine boasts impressive specifications, including up to 352 AMD EPYC "Zen4" CPU cores capable of reaching 4 GHz peak frequencies. The system provides users with 400-450 GB of HBM3 RAM and features doubled Infinity Fabric bandwidth compared to any previous AMD EPYC server platform. Given that each VM had four CPUs, this yields 88 Zen 4 cores per CPU socket, with 9 GB of memory per core. The architecture includes 800 Gb/s of NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand connectivity and 14 TB of local NVMe SSD storage. The development marks a strategic shift in addressing memory performance limitations, which Microsoft identifies as a critical bottleneck in HPC applications. This custom design particularly benefits sectors requiring intensive computational resources, including automotive design, aerospace simulation, weather modeling, and energy research. While the CPU appears custom-designed for Microsoft's needs, it bears similarities to previously rumored AMD processors, suggesting a possible connection to the speculated MI300C chip architecture. The system's design choices, including disabled SMT and single-tenant configuration, clearly focus on optimizing performance for specific HPC workloads. If readers can recall, Intel also made customized Xeons for AWS and their needs, which is normal in the hyperscaler space, given they drive most of the revenue.
