That it comes with a literal ladder should be an indicator of how large the Mercedes G-class 4×4² will be.

The upsized version of the already quite large G-Class, the 4×4² is the off-roader for people who have never uttered the phrase “too much.” Although the new G-Class launched in 2018, the current 4×4² still uses the old G-Class platform. An update, therefore, is only too welcome. And this time, it’s widely believed (even though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet), that the new 4×4 ‘squared’ is being developed by and will be sold under the AMG label, possibly as a G63.

The extreme G has been on sale since 2015 and we’ve been seeing spy shots of it since at least November of last year. Seen testing in the snow and on the Nurburgring, the shots do a good job of expressing the supertruck’s two moods: extreme speed, extreme off-roading.

These new pictures don’t show any less camouflage, but Mercedes isn’t hiding much. Limited to the massive wheel arches and a roof rack, it does make us wonder what’s going on under there. Could there be carbon fiber and a light bar?

What Mercedes hasn’t hidden, though, is a lovely shade of blue that we distinctly hope will make it to production as well as a black grille and mirror caps. Whatever it turns out Mercedes is hiding, what it’s showing looks pretty good.

Something about the lighting, too, does a good job of showing off the (apparently) aluminum suspension and how beefy it is. That will be important if the G550 4×4² wants to improve on the last model.

The aluminum componentry would suggest that Mercedes wants to maintain the 4×4²’s duality of spirit. The first-gen truck can hit 60 mph in less than 6 seconds despite its 16-inches of ground clearance.

Expected to come with an AMG-sourced twin-turbo V8, the new one will have to be pretty powerful to keep up with the last generation’s 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, though we fully expect Mercedes will be able to manage it.

Mercedes still hasn’t given us an official launch date, the expectation is that this new truck will be unveiled before the end of the year.
