The next normal: HR Strategies for 2021 and beyond

2020 is now – finally – hindsight. It was a year of unprecedented disruption – how businesses connected with their employees and customers transformed nearly overnight.

In their recent article, "The next normal arrives: Trends that will define 2021—and beyond" McKinsey speak of 2021 being a year of transition.

"Barring any unexpected catastrophes, individuals, businesses, and society can start to look forward to shaping their futures rather than just grinding through the present."

Personally, I saw many organisations rapidly pivot to remote environments, undergoing years’ worth of digital transformation in a matter of months. But from a HR/People perspective, there's a huge difference between being remote-friendly and remote-first. Many aspects of team culture, collaboration, and new employee onboarding usually depend upon huge amounts of osmosis and have historically taken place in person in a physical environment together.

This step change in remote adoption is now arguably substantial enough to reconsider current business models.

"The COVID-19 crisis has created an imperative for companies to reconfigure their operations—and an opportunity to transform them. To the extent that they do so, greater productivity will follow."

Accordingly, many business leaders and executive teams are conducting a market scan to make sure that the systems & processes they already have in place are fit for purpose in a post-COVID work world. They are selectively modernising their tech stacks and upskilling their people to set them up for success in an increasingly digital world.
