Usage[]

Thimble Reed can be harvested to yield Reed Fiber and Thimble Reed Seeds. Reed Fiber can be used to make Atmo Suits in an Exosuit Forge, clothes using the Textile Factory, Insulation using the Molecular Forge.

Growth[]

A Thimble Reed requires the temperature range of 22 °C to 37 °C, and atmosphere of Oxygen, Polluted Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Water or Polluted Water.

Wild[]

A wild Thimble Reed takes 8 cycles to grow.

Domestic[]

A domestic Thimble Reed can be planted in Farm Tiles or Hydroponic Farms. It requires 160 kg/cycle Polluted Water.

A domestic Thimble Reed takes 2 cycles to grow. This can be further shortened by putting it in a Greenhouse, halving the water cost of growing a single Reed Fiber.

Using Thimble Reeds to dispose of excess waste water from Lavatories[]

Since Lavatories produce more Polluted Water than they consume clean Water, a closed Bathroom Loop can be used to feed a Thimble Reed with the excess waste from the toilets.

During one cycle, a single Thimble Reed plant consumes Polluted Water equal to 23.88 Lavatory uses in a closed bathroom loop.

• The fact that this plant does not need solid fertilization makes it even more suited for this purpose.

If this is done very early on in the colony's existence, the harvests can accumulate such that entering the mid-game (e.g. having exo-suits) is easy. However, making Insulation will most likely require a cultivated farm.

Other Tips[]

Since Reed Fiber doesn't rot, it's possible to simply scavenge wild fibers and harvest from the wild growing plants instead of growing it yourself most of the time.

Besides Waterweed, which only grows if flooded, Thimble Reed is the only plant that has the ability to grow underwater; however this does not remove the need to irrigate the plant even if you build Farm Tiles in polluted water.
