TON SAI

Whether you travel from Phuket, Koh Lanta, Krabi or any other destination to Koh Phi Phi almost everyone arrives at the Ton Sai Pier. Don’t be alarmed if you suddenly end up in a swirling crowd from quieter waters. Phi Phi is a very popular holiday destination for backpackers, beach lovers but also for those looking for peace and quiet. When you arrive at the pier of Ton Sai you don’t expect that there are places where you can look for peace and quiet, but there certainly are! You can read more about that in our other articles about Koh Phi Phi on this site.

Ton Sai Pier

Let’s start at the beginning, the Ton Sai Pier… When you arrive by speedboat or ferry on the Ton Sai Pier there are dozens of locals waving signs of resorts. Also from the U Rip Resort where we stayed someone was waiting for us. While arriving The Burger King letters will  immediately draw your notice. It’s obvious that Phi Phi is totally different from for example Koh Yao Yai where we came from before we ended up here. After a few steps you walk under an indoor area, where you can book ferry or speedboat tickets to other locations. After you’ve walked past the worst crowds, you’re in the beating heart of Koh Phi Phi. Welcome to Ton Sai Village!

Ton Sai Village

On a personal note, we liked Ton Sai Village! The main street offers enough variety and there are plenty of good restaurants, bars, supermarkets and several shops. You will certainly not die of hunger or thirst here! Ton Sai Village is from west to east about one and a half kilometers long and is situated in a bay where Ton Sai Beach is located. On the other side is another bay and the beach there is called Loh Dalum Beach. At the beach of Loh Dalum there is a good party at night and you will also find the typical Thai fire shows! The narrowest part of Ton Sai Village, the road to Loh Dalum Beach is a maximum of 300 meters. So you’ll be there in no time!

DO YOU KNOW? It can be quite packed in Ton Sai Village, this is because a lot of day trippers from Phuket and others arrive. Luckily around 4 PM it gets a lot quieter because the masses leave the island.

What is there to do in Ton Sai Village?

If you are looking for a good tour operator or fine diving school you will find them all in the capital (village) of Phi Phi. You can also go to the Phi Phi Viewpoint, which we definitely recommend if you are staying at Koh Phi Phi! By the way, if you want to bring a nice souvenir or want to buy a (forgotten) swimming trunks / bikini, Ton Sai Village it is! Withdrawing and exchanging money can also be done here at several places. There is also a fairly authentic market in the village of Ton Sai. This market is not very big but nice to see if you are in the neighborhood. Finally, you can also snack and drink at the many supermarkets such as (yes here as well) … the 7-Eleven! The prices at the 7- Eleven on Koh Phi Phi are a bit higher than on the mainland. But it’s still useful if you are planning a day at the beach, for example Long Beach or Laem Tong Beach. Have fun!

Ton Sai Beach

We would love to tell you that Ton Sai Beach is the most beautiful beach of Koh Phi Phi but unfortunately that is not the case. What is true is that there are plenty of longtail boats that are docked at Ton Sai Beach can take you to the most beautiful beaches on the island! What we do appreciate is a shake or snack in the sand of this beach where you can fully enjoy the environment because it is beautiful! Ton Sai Beach can actually be divided into three parts. The Ton Sai Pier we wrote about above, the western and eastern part of Ton Sai beach.

PLEASE NOTE! On a few places the sea is closed off at Ton Sai Beach so that no (longtail) boats can come. Outside the barrier, swimming is not safe because of the longtail boats that easily overlook you in the water.

West of Ton Sai Beach

The most beautiful stretch of Ton Sai Beach can be found in the west of the bay. Here you will also find a number of resorts such as the Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort or Mama Beach Residence which are definitely worth checking out. The beauty of the western part of Ton Sai Beach is that it still seems fairly untouched. The water is a lot cleaner and the sand is fine and clean. Despite the fact that there are much nicer beaches on Koh Phi Phi, this part of the beach is the most beautiful part of Ton Sai Beach as far as we are concerned!

East of Ton Sai Beach

If you walk from Ton Sai Village in southeastern direction then the beach is actually not so bad. Some parts of the sea are delimited so it is safe to swim. On the beach you will also find a number of resorts such as the U Rip Resort and Phi Phi Andaman Beach Resort. A little further on you can book a private tour with a longtail boat for a nice price. In the evening there are a number of fire shows to admire to reasonable loud music like at Carlito Bar. Nice to watch with a cocktail or beer in your hand! Around noon it gets quieter here. If you still want to look for crowds then you have to be at Loh Dalum Beach.
