True Temper is a staple in golf shafts throughout the modern era of golf. While the Dynamic Gold is as popular as ever, True Temper still continues to find new ways to give golfers fresh options to optimize their iron performance. One of their more recent efforts is the True Temper AMT Tour White shaft. AMT actually stands for “Ascending Mass Technology” – the shaft weight increases 3 grams between each club. Out of the AMT family, the AMT Tour White is the low spin, low launch option with Tour weighting.
How Does it Feel?
Utilizing the same “DNA” of the classic Dynamic Gold shaft, the True Temper AMT shaft gets heavier as you progress from your long irons to your short irons. What this means is that the AMT Tour White is lighter in the long irons and the shorter irons have a more traditional Tour weighting and feel. I found the longer irons to feel noticeably lighter and smoother through impact. The scoring irons are definitely firmer with a little extra heft to them. What you’re really gaining here is that the short irons are firm, crisp, and responsive like you’d expect from a regular Dynamic Gold, while the longer irons have a similar feel in your hands but a lot less of a battle throughout the swing.
Flex profile seems to shift a little as you work through the AMT Tour White set as well. The shorter irons feel firmer with a lower kick and stiffer tip. As you move toward the longer irons, the kick moves a little further up the shaft and the feel lightens up a bit. While the kick point does seem to move up, the tip still has a firmer feel to stay consistent with the set.
On-Course Performance
One thing to keep in mind is that the True Temper AMT Tour White is not supposed to be wildly different than the original Dynamic Gold shaft. In terms of the shorter irons, I really found very little difference. My trajectory, spin, distance, etc were all about the same as a DG x100. The biggest performance differences came from the long and mid irons. Frankly, I’ve always found the Dynamic Gold to be a tough play as you get into the longer irons. My AMT Tour White experience was much different, however. I was able to get easy penetrating ball flights with tight control. The more player-friendly long irons made manipulating shots much easier. I would say the AMT Tour White could be the answer to the prayers of a player that likes the control and flight of the Dynamic Gold but feels like they’re constantly fighting against the long irons.
Final Thoughts
Like I said, I think the True Temper AMT Tour White is a great option for the better player that likes the standard Dynamic Gold, but finds the middle and longer irons tough to play. The AMT Tour White could solve that problem for them. Having that same tight control but easier launch is a big benefit in the AMT Tour White. Trust me, the lighter weights make a huge difference in the long irons. As always though, our experiences and swings are different. Make sure you work with a quality fitter first when considering the AMT family.
