Lidders L I'm in the process of re-assembling the engine & after a major rebuild. I've obviously replaced all the stretch bolts in the engine with new but do I really need to replace all the bolts on the engine mounts as well? There's probably 20 bolts between the 3 mounts I,ve loosened off. That's not going to be a cheap trip to TPS. If not what do you do re torque values? #1 · Sep 5, 2020 I'm in the process of re-assembling the engine & after a major rebuild. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Sep 6, 2020 Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't see a problem with reusing engine mounting bolts, they're not critical to keeping fluids and gases from escaping as would be a cylinder head bolt or PD injector bolt. It seems the direction this is heading in, is every bolt that's been removed must be replaced. Is there an engineering justification for this, or is it the manufactures ar$e covering in case of a claim, or more cynically ££££££££££? I've had my T5 since new, and not replaced any bolts apart from the ones that come in a brake pad kit (you only get one per side, and that has fresh thread lock on it, thus making the change muppet proof) and my van isn't falling apart any time soon, 108.000 miles 11 years. #3 · Sep 9, 2020 For big bolts like this, suspension, etc, I'm of the view that if you get them proper tight they will be fine. After all, almost all garages will just tighten everything with a windy gun without a torque wrench in site..!! #4 · Sep 9, 2020 The issue is when these bolts attach to the aluminium engine block. If you don't get the torque right you'll easily strip the thread (As I've just done).🤬 #5 · Sep 9, 2020 I agree with bluzie. I wouldn't dream of not replacing stretch bolts on vital crank or cam application but I've never replaced an engine mounting bolt, and I've never had one come loose. Sometimes I think it's a game, they have scared everyone merdeless with the thought of a crank bolt coming loose so they know they can get away with adding £150 on bolts which are mostly only obtainable from VW simply by saying they must be changed. Imagine that multiplied by the amount of cam belts required every four years (according to some VW literature). I recently did a cam belt and everything else needed on a old Golf TDI I bought off a neighbour for my brother in law who has lost his business due to covid. I didn't replace the engine mounting bolts and I'm willing to bet money that they won't ever come loose. More important for the future safety of the car was the brake hose I found stretched around the wrong side of the bracket on the shocker! #6 · Apr 21, 2023 What you said sounds interesting. I was always afraid to reuse some old bolts and just throw them away. #7 · Apr 21, 2023 (Edited) I've had the same concerns about reusing bolts when doing my own rebuilds. To answer your question, I personally have reused engine mounting bolts without any issues, and I haven't noticed any significant difference in performance. I think the idea of replacing every bolt that has been removed is probably more of a manufacturer's recommendation to cover their backs in case of a claim. But hey, if you're not experiencing any issues with your current bolts, then I don't see any harm in reusing them. Still, some of the old bolts can be damaged, but I discovered one website where you can order a bunch of new bolts. Here's the link: https://www.scrooz.com.au/ Insert Quotes Post Reply
