Tuan is a male Bornean Orangutan and the dominant male of his group.

Biography[]

Pre Monkey World (1987-2002)[]

Tuan was presumably wild born before being smuggled into Taiwan for the pet trade.

Tuan was found wandering in Taiwan in 2000, but was captured 3 days later. He was brought to Pingtung Rescue Centre and placed in quarintine. It is presumed that he either escaped his owner's home or was released after he got too difficult to keep.

Life at Monkey World (2002-present)[]

Tuan, along with an adolescent female orangutan named Hsiao-Lan, came to Monkey World on 24 January 2002 to join the park's other orangutans; Amy, her son Gordon, RoRo, Hsiao-Quai and Lucky (the latter three also previously lived at Pingtung Rescue Centre). Tuan acted as a father figure to Gordon, who had lost his father Banghi in 1998. However, two years later, Tuan kept being disrupted from mating Amy by Gordon, resulting in the older male biting the youngster. Amy came to his son's defence and a fight broke out, resulting in the group being temporarily split into two; one group consisting of Tuan, Hsiao-Quai, Hsiao-Lan (who would take a turn staying with the other group) and Lucky and the other consisting of Gordon, Amy and RoRo. The group eventually came together again, though Gordon later left to join the Orangutan Nursery.

Tuan has so far fathered five children; Kai (b. 2005) whom he had with Hsiao-Quai, Hsiao-Ning (b. 2003) and Dinda (b. 2006 d. 2020) whom he had with RoRo, an unnamed daughter (b. 2008 d. 2008) whom he had with Amy and Awan (b. 2012) whom he had with Hsiao-Lan.

In 2014, Tuan's Group gained a two new members in A-mei and Joly.

Awan, along with Hsiao-Quai (who had adopted Awan after Hsiao-Lan rejected her) joined Tuan's Group from Gordon's Group before later moving to the Orangutan Nursery after Dinda and Lingga joined the group. In 2015, Dinda left the group and moved to Rostock Zoo in Germany (where Hsiao-Ning had moved to in 2012).

In 2016, Joly and Lingga left the group and moved to Rio Safari Elche in Spain with Kai.

In 2017, Tuan became a grandfather after Hsiao-Ning gave birth to a daughter named Niah. That same year, Tuan and his group moved into an enclosure (previously home to Sally's Group) next door to Cindy's Group. Also this year, Hsiao-Quai and Awan rejoined the group. Sadly, Hsiao-Quai later passed away from heart failure after getting a urinary tract infection.

In February 2018, Tuan gained another granddaughter named Lintang via Dinda.

In November 2021, Tuan gained another granddaughter named Membelai via Kai.

In June 2022, Tuan gained a grandson named Akeno via Hsiao-Ning.

In July 2025, Tuan gained another grandson named Tonic via Awan.

Currently, Tuan lives with Lucky, A-mei, RoRo and Mimi-Loren.
