Anonymous asked: I don't understand the difference between "serene highness" and "royal highness" except that RH is higher. If I were, for example, the reigning prince of Monaco, I would want to go ahead and give myself a promotion. I'd be royal and a king. And why does the HRH make such a difference in the way members of the UK's royal family are treated? Why should leaving the HRH make any difference in the way the Wessex children are treated versus the way the York daughters are treated? Regards, Maggy

Hi Maggy

Good question. HSH never existed in the British system which has only ever had HRH and HH. In the Germanic system, HSH ranks below HH, which ranks below HSH. It was only used in Britain when overseas royals came to live here and the crown gave permissions for their title to be in affect over heard.

Yes, it’s difficult to understand why everyone doesn’t give themselves the highest title going. I suspect it’s largely tradition.

In regard to the Wessex children - legally I don’t think it makes any difference how they are treated; however I think it’s fair to say that the public and the media are far more interested in Princes and Princesses than people with lesser titles. It’s romance at the end of the day…
