Understand 12G 6G

PostThu May 30, 2019 2:12 pm

Hi,I have a Flanders CM171 and a LG C8 and I want to send and HD-SDI signal to my flanders and a HDMI 4K signal to my C8. I was thinking in buying and old Decklink 4k Pro which downscales SDI B to HD and then convert SDI A to 4K HDMI to my C8. So my question is: my only option is the Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G to go to my C8 in 4K HDMI? If I'm only working at a maximum resolution of 2160p25 (6G?), could I be using a Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 6G to convert my 4K 12G SDI signal to 4k HDMI? Hope it's a question that makes sense... If somebody can instruct me I will be very thankful. Top Offline

Generally 12G SDI capable products are capable of accepting 6G SDI video signals but the reverse is not true. A device with a 6G SDI input port will not be able to handle or process a 12G SDI input signal (which uses twice the bandwidth). So, if you are only working at 2160p25 (or 2160p30) or below, this only requires a 6G SDI video signal. Which should work with the Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 6G.It's only if you need higher frame rates at 4K/UltraHD like 2160p50 or 2160p60 that you need the full bandwidth of 12G SDI. Then you would need a Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 12G to convert the signal. But for lower frame rates the 6G Mini Converter should work fine. Top Offline

Then theres the SDI cables, 12G connectors seems to be needed for higher bandwith while 6G coaxial cables are used for short 12G SDI cables. Neutrik has a list of compatible cables to be used with their 12G connector and the lists contains 6G cables, so byuer needs to check what coaxial cable is used if one wants "true" 12G SDI pre build cables. I am happy about the performance of KabelDirekt Digital Coaxial Audio Video Cable. It gives me stable signals, and it’s not hard to pair with my devices. Top Offline

The Flanders CM171 is SDI 3G. Most Ultrastudio/Decklink devices will negotiate correctly with a HD reference monitor whether they are 12G or 6G. For example, I have a SmallHD 1703 P3X as my reference monitor (3G, HD and HDMI 2.0), an Ultrastudio Mini 4K (12G, HDMI 2.0), and a Panasonic 4K client monitor (HDMI 2.0). If I send a 4K signal out of Avid or Resolve the image is correctly down converted to HD for the reference monitor, via either SDI or HDMI, and is passed through, downstream, as 4K via HDMI to the client monitor, without issue or the need for further converter boxes.I realise the CM171 does not have HDMI in or out but if you connect the LG directly to the Decklink via HDMI, the same should apply. i.e. you should (should I say - I haven't tested an actual Flanders in this regard) be able to output a 4K signal from a BMD device and the Flanders show it correctly down converted to HD, regardless of SDI type, whilst the LG gets a correct signal too. At least it works this way for the SmallHD. The only reason I went with the SmallHD, as opposed to a Flanders is that I can also send a 3D calibrated lut to the client monitor downstream, from it, which is the only reason you would possibly need an external box , as far as I can see and since as I understand it you can load a 3D lut directly to the LG, not even then in your case.I should add for clarity that neither the CM171 or SmallHD will pass through a 6/12G single link 4K signal, since they are only 3G.
