Understanding MGCP/Megaco (H.248)
“- [Instructor] When transmitting multimedia over an IP network, the signal must go through multiple transformations and devices before reaching its final destination. Some of those devices include media gateway controllers. They're also called call agents or softswitches, and these provide signaling logic. Media gateways provide media logic to convert circuit-switched voice traffic to packet-based traffic. Media Gateway Control Protocol handles the signaling and session management required during a multimedia session between the media gateway controller and the media gateway. Megaco, more commonly known as H.248, performs the same functions as Media Gateway Control Protocol, but it is an enhanced version that can operate with either H.323 or Session Initiation Protocol.
