Objectives:

– Students revise the past perfect and distinguish it from the past simple.

Grammar and vocabulary (Ngữ pháp và từ vựng)

Exercise 1. Use the verbs in brackets in the past perfect. (Chia động từ trong ngoặc ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành.)

1. Why did Tom’s mother get angry with him?

Because he (break) her favourite vase.

2. When did you watch TV last night?

When I (do) all my homework.

3. Did you first see them at my last birthday party?

No, I (meet) them before.

4. Why did she return home?

She suddenly remembered she (not turn off) the gas stove.

5. How did they like our city?

They said it was the loveliest city they ever (see).

6. It rained yesterday after it (be) dry for months.

7. By the time he arrived, all his classmates (leave).

8. We didn’t have their new phone number because they (move) to the South.

Exercise 3. There are five mistakes in the use of tenses in the following story. Find and correct them. (Có 5 lỗi về cách dùng các thì trong câu chuyện sau. Tìm và sửa chúng.)

While George was reading in bed, two thieves had climbed -> climbed into his kitchen. When they had entered the house, they went into the dinning room. It was very dark, so they had turned -> turned on a torch. Suddenly, they heard a voice behind them.

“What’s up? What’s up?” a voice had called out -> called out. The thieves dropped the torch and ran away as quickly as they could.

George had heard -> heard a noise and came downstairs quickly. He turned on the light but he couldn’t see anybody. The thieves already went -> had already gone. But George’s parrot, Henry, was still there.

“What’s up?” he called.

“Nothing, Henry”, George said and smiled. “Go back to sleep”.

Trong khi George đang đọc sách ở trên giường, hai tên trộm đã trèo vào phòng bếp của anh ấy. Khi chúng đã đột nhập vào căn nhà, chúng đã tiến vào phòng ăn. Nó rất tối, vì thế chúng đã bật đèn lên. Đột nhiên, chúng nghe thấy một giọng nói ở phía sau chúng.

“Có chuyện gì vậy? Có chuyện gì vậy?” một giọng nói đã vang lên. Bọn trộm tắt đèn và chạy trốn thật nhanh có thể.

George đã nghe tiếng động và đi nhanh xuống dưới nhà. Anh ấy bật đèn nhưng anh ấy đã không nhìn thấy bất kì ai. Các tên trộm đã trốn đi. Nhưng con vẹt của George, Henrry, vẫn ở đó.

“Có chuyện gì vậy?” chú vẹt nói.

“Không có gì, Henry,” George nói và cười. “Ngủ tiếp đi.”
