Seville Spanish - Spain Hi there! I'm not sure at all if "instead" can be used at the end of a sentence, like, (e.g.: He didn't pick it up, dropping the rest instead.) I've used it a few times, and seen others do it, but some other people say it's not correct. Thanks in advance. M

Russian I've definitely heard it used by many people but you might want to wait for a native speaker's explanation. E

Massachusetts, U.S. English - U.S. I hear this a lot, but perhaps I should let someone else answer instead. :) Seriously, I don't see anything wrong with it. If it violates some obscure rule of which I'm not aware, it's probably just advisory - write your sentence another way, unless that's awkward, in which case go ahead and write it this way. (There's a current thread here on ending a sentence with "as well" that discusses this sort of advisory rule.) Packard

USA, English I tried that once; it did not work. I think I will try this instead. I cannot say it will work in all instances but there is nothing wrong with it as shown above though you could easily invert it. I tried that once; it did not work. Instead I think I will try this. (I suppose someone will come along and say you should not end a sentence with "this". :)) You must log in or register to reply here. Share: Bluesky LinkedIn WhatsApp Email Share Link
