Thanks to my previous threads on here I’m pretty much set on a mk3 Volvo V70. As I only do about 3-4K miles a year I was after the 2.5T petrol model. The T6 is out due to tax cost. However, there are literally no R-design petrol models about! I have found a few 2.4 D5 r-design models which are newer, lower miles and less money than the equivalent 2.5T SE models...My previous A6 was a diesel and in 3 years I never saw the DPF light, what’s the general thoughts on how quick I would kill the DPF on the Volvo? One option is to just budget for changing the DPF at some point... edthefed

It will depend on how those 3-4000 miles are accumulated3000 one mile trips your asking for trouble.30 x 100 mile motorway journeys no problem. We have one diesel and one petrol....the diesel is used for almost all journeys over 30 miles. The petrol used for local journeys.Diesel does about 7500 per year but a lot of motorway and dual carriageway journeys mcbook

I've had a 2010 V70 D5 for the last 4 years.Mainly used by my wife for short trips with longer runs at the weekends to see relatives etc. We do approx 8,000 miles per year like this and I've never seen any DPF issues.Overall reliability very good with the expected age-related maintenance. MYOB

Had a 2011 D5 R-Design previously. It was a great car. It was an automatic and I was getting mid 30s mpg. Did the occasional long haul trip but mostly local driving. Never had any dpf problems, nor on any other Volvo's I have owned, including current V60. Over on the Volvo forum's, I do not come across anyone with dpf problems so I think there's a minimal risk. rallyeS2

Thanks chaps!! This is all music to my ears as the option of diesel gives me much more choice!! I’ve had a look on eBay and new DPF filters seem to be around the £300 mark which isn’t too bad so I could factor this in when purchasing. MYOB

good luck. Always advisable to get a Volvo with full service history too. XRMike

Lots of positive views regarding D5 dpf filters, they seem to be trouble free in comparison with the 1.6d and 2.0d engines (French engined Volvo cars). Infact out of the many diesel vehicles of this period Volvo D5 dpfs seem to be very robust. As with any dpf vehicle you do need to go for a decent journey so often to let the dpf filter regen, usually a good 20min haul on a motorway or bypass at constant causing speed does this. Failure to do this allows the dpf filter to become clogged and as such may require a forced regen at a garage via Volvo diagnostic software. The 2.5t petrol version you speak of uses a detuned Focus st engine which is a good unit when looked after but will be thirsty unless driven lightly. Should you go for a D5 I would highly advise on the 205bhp twin turbo unit, it's the Euro 5 engine and is a peach, also responds well to a remap if that's your thing. Hope this helps, had a D5 for 4 years and always been into Volvo's. Mike. rallyeS2

It has certainly opened up the options for some nicer specced cars! I’m struggling to find a 205hp on in budget apart from a ropey ex-plod car! I don’t mind the poor economy of the 2.5T as my mileage is so small it’s just the Cars available all have poor spec generally... Will keep an eye out for the 205hp version now though! MYOB

There's nothing wrong with the 2.0L diesels of that vintage. These are the D3s and D4s. They are 5 cylinder engines made by Volvos. XRMike

D5 here. Had it a year, have done around 9000 miles. Mostly it's 10 miles to work in traffic but tend to take it for longer runs every now and then. No issues with DPF. Deerfoot

Another D5 owner here, have had no dpf issues in the three years and 36000 miles I've had it. I do an 11 mile each way commute daily and extended weekend trips.Mine's a 205 bhp V60 and has been trouble free. rallyeS2

D5 is sounding like a good choice so far then! I don’t mind giving it regular runs to keep the DPF demons away!! Autotrader saved search set up and checking every day! The 205hp ones I’ve seen are all over budget at the minute but am keeping an eye out. Thanks again guys.
