Vanderbilt Health President and CEO Jeff Balser to Retire After nearly two decades serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Vanderbilt Health and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, will retire from both leadership roles on Dec. 31. A national search for his successor, who will also hold both leadership roles, will be led by the Vanderbilt Health Board of Directors. Balser’s announcement culminates a career-long journey that began at Vanderbilt in the mid-1980s as a medical student and doctoral dual degree candidate. After early career accomplishments at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Balser was recruited back to Vanderbilt in 1998 as a clinician, investigator, and as the first associate dean for Physician-Scientist Development, beginning a series of successively responsible leadership roles. In 2008, Balser became the 12th Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine since the school’s founding in 1875, and in 2009, at age 47, Balser was appointed to the Medical Center’s top role at that time, vice chancellor for Health Affairs. For the past 17 years he has continued to serve as the Medical Center’s chief executive and medical school dean. As Balser took the helm of Vanderbilt Health, the Medical Center had $2.3 billion in annual net revenues, 16,000 employees and 2,100 full-time faculty, and its cash reserves were depleted. Today, he leads an organization composed of an eight-hospital health system with more than 2,000 beds and 200 ambulatory locations across five states, caring for more than 4 million patients each year. Vanderbilt Health’s workforce now exceeds 45,000, including 5,000 employed clinicians and scientists. Pivotal to Vanderbilt Health’s explosive growth was the effort Balser led with Vanderbilt University leadership during 2015-2016 to legally and financially separate Vanderbilt Health from the university, allowing the Medical Center to become its own nonprofit entity while still maintaining close ties between the two institutions that continue to fuel academic excellence and scientific discoveries. Recent examples of Balser’s impact on the growth of Vanderbilt Health include the addition of Jim Ayers Tower, the largest, single hospital construction expansion in Vanderbilt University Hospital’s history, completion of a four-floor expansion to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and the addition of 270-bed Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital to Vanderbilt Health. He will be retiring with plans in place, including final government approval, for the construction of a new freestanding hospital in Murfreesboro, to be called Vanderbilt Health Rutherford County.

A new study from Vanderbilt Health has identified a data-driven road map for early recognition and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have identified more than 70 medical conditions that appear more frequently in patients who later develop the disease. The study, published in Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy, identified four primary types of conditions: • Mental health conditions, such as depression, paranoia/psychosis and suicidal ideation • Neurologic and sleep-related conditions, such as insomnia and sleep apnea • Cardiovascular conditions, such as hypertension • Metabolic conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes “By identifying medical patterns that consistently precede Alzheimer’s disease, we can unlock new opportunities for risk reduction, early intervention and improved patient outcomes,” said Xue Zhong, PhD, research assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Genetic Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. “It is projected that delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by just five years could cut the incidence rate in half.” Zhong is co-corresponding author of the study with Nancy Cox, PhD, professor of Medicine. Some of the most important work in health care happens behind the scenes. David, a clinical informatics pharmacist and lead application analyst for Vanderbilt HealthIT, is a recent recipient of a Vanderbilt University Medical Center Credo Award. Trained first as an engineer, Mulherin brings a problem-solving mindset to patient safety. He develops clinical decision support tools within Epic, our electronic health record system, to improve the safe use of high-risk, high-complexity medications. When Epic replaced StarPanel in 2017 and lacked an outpatient order for parenteral nutrition, it created a serious safety concern for patients with intestinal failure. Mulherin “utilized other tools in Epic to create a new functionality where none had existed,” wrote Dawn Adams, MD, MS, medical director of the Center for Human Nutrition. “His work in HealthIT has positively impacted the safety of countless patients within the VUMC system and beyond.” He also led the Epic build for the adult, nurse-managed heparin protocol, supporting safer anticoagulation management across disciplines. “I like the challenge of problem-solving,” Mulherin said. “At the end of the day, it’s knowing that what I’m doing … makes it easier for the front-line people to be able to do their jobs safely.” Congratulations to David on this well-deserved recognition. A childbirth emergency at Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital highlights the role of coordinated maternal and neonatal care. Ariel, a nurse at the hospital, developed sudden pregnancy complications at 41 weeks, experiencing a uterine rupture and a complete placental abruption, a rare and life-threatening combination that occurs in roughly 1 in 5,000 births. Her surgical team delivered her daughter, Helen "Annie," in 14 minutes. Annie wasn't breathing and required immediate resuscitation before spending four days in the Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Diane Attardi, MD, assistant professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Vanderbilt Health and medical director of the Level II NICU in Clarksville, said Annie's recovery reflects the strength of that collaboration. "This is a wonderful story and encompasses the expert care provided in three of our women's and children's units, Labor and Delivery, NICU and Mother-Baby, on our third floor." Today, Annie is thriving, and Ariel is back caring for patients at the same hospital where her family's lives were saved. https://lnkd.in/eWqsNm5R

Colorectal cancer is becoming more common in adults under 50, and many of these patients have no family history or obvious risk factors. Dr. Cathy Eng from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center reminds us that there is no typical young colorectal cancer patient. “I noticed the rise early in my career, about 20 years ago,” said Dr. Eng. “I was seeing several young patients with Stage 4 metastatic disease, or advanced disease at presentation.” Researchers are investigating why colorectal cancer is on the rise in younger people, but as of right now, they do not have definitive answers. The trend highlights the importance of getting recommended screenings, knowing your risk factors (things that make it more likely that you will get cancer), and monitoring yourself for symptoms. Read more below about what to watch for and how to protect your health.

A routine morning in the kitchen led to a 17-day stay at the Vanderbilt Burn Center for college senior Sean Smith. Hot oil left him with second- and third-degree burns over more than 25% of his body. He was admitted Nov. 11, 2024, and began intensive wound care, hydrotherapy and physical therapy. “Despite this, Sean showed incredible perseverance, always agreeing to participate in physical therapy to the degree he was able,” said Blane Sexton, PT, DPT. Burn care specialist Michael Elam recalled that Smith approached each dressing change with determination. “He knew that this was a necessary process to get him back to his baseline.” Nearly six months later, Smith graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering from Murray State University and returned to an active lifestyle. “I can’t stress this enough: The nurses made that experience so much easier,” Smith said. “They were very aware that I was a person and not just a patient.” Read more: https://bit.ly/4lmZlHk

Today millions of American adults are living with the persistent effects of long COVID — brain fog, exhaustion and shortness of breath — with no proven effective interventions. To find successful treatment, Vanderbilt Health is leading an expanded multicenter trial to evaluate the efficacy of a drug called baricitinib. Already FDA approved for acute COVID-19, the medication is being assessed for how well it treats the neurological and cardiopulmonary symptoms of long COVID. Baricitinib specifically targets the body’s inflammatory response, which is linked to cognitive issues and heart disease. "Long COVID is a massive yet under-recognized global public health problem," says Vanderbilt Health’s E. Wesley Ely, MD, MPH, principal investigator of the trial. "We aim to reduce the gap of knowledge regarding this multisystem disease that can be so devastating to the long-term well-being of millions." The year-long study of 550 participants will be one of the few large-scale trials focused on immunomodulation — treating the body's overactive immune response rather than just the initial infection. Faced with rising behavioral and mental health-related visits to the emergency department, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt established a multidisciplinary Behavioral Health Taskforce to bridge the gap between emergency and inpatient care. By introducing twice-daily behavioral acuity huddles and adding a Behavioral Emergency Support Team and a board-certified behavior analyst, Monroe Carell has shifted from retrospective reviews to real-time, proactive planning. The new model has yielded significant benefits, such as a 78% reduction in behavioral health boarding, more than a 50% decrease in length of stay and a 67% reduction in restraint utilization. “If you’re trying to do things in isolation with kids across different teams and nobody is talking to each other, things are going to fall through the cracks,” said Heather Kreth, PsyD, associate professor and director of Acute Behavioral Health Services at Monroe Carell. “This group makes sure everyone has a voice in behavioral health care and we keep this work moving forward.” The Children’s Hospital Association recently recognized Monroe Carell for these enhancements with an invitation to present at the CHA Annual Leadership Conference and an article featuring the new care model. A summer job working at a camp for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities introduced Paul Dressler, MD, MPH, to the relationships that would define his career. “There was a kiddo who had been kicked out of camp the previous few years because he was a pretty big guy and fairly aggressive,” Dressler said. “My job was to make sure he didn’t get kicked out again.” With support from the family and a therapist, “The kid did not get kicked out of camp, and I had a lot of fun.” Dressler is now associate professor of Clinical Pediatrics and medical director of Developmental Medicine at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. He is a 2025 Patient and Family Choice Award recipient, based on nominations from patients and families across Vanderbilt Health. “It’s one of the few fields where there’s still a lot of art to the medicine,” he said. “I can often develop some really nice relationships with the patients and families and follow them through challenging times and good times.” Make a difference for children and families across our region.
