The 75 MW Tan Thuan nearshore wind farm in Vietnam’s Ca Mau province started operation on 30 October, after commissioning and other work intensified in the months prior to that to bring the project to commercial operation before 1 November and secure preferential Feed-In Tariff (FIT) rates.

After numerous difficulties and challenges the project faced during construction and commissioning, primarily including those related to the global pandemic, the regulator EVN Electric Power Trading Company (EVN EPTC) issued the project’s commissioning certificate, the developer Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2 (PECC2) said via social media.

“The COVID-19 pandemic put tremendous pressure on the progress of power projects in Vietnam, and more particularly on wind projects, that had to “race” to reach their Commercial Operations Date before the 1st of November 2021 to enjoy preferential FIT rates (according to Decision 39/2018/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister)”, the PECC2 said.

The Tan Thuan wind farm is the largest nearshore project to be put into operation in Vietnam so far.

The wind farm features Siemens Gamesa’s SG 5.0-145 turbines, for which the wind turbine manufacturer received an order last summer.

The 75 MW Tan Thuan can produce around 220 million kWh/year, contributing to ensuring energy security and promoting the Ca Mau province’s local economic development, the developer said.
