    Heidevolk was a surprise discovery for me. Close to what I would call real VM - mid-tempo, "epic", battle-themed. Not just folk metal like Korpiklaani (seruously, Korpiklaani is great, but how it ended up HERE?)

    Non-existent genre. But even if it really was a thing, how the fuck can you start a Wiki with "Viking metal is a subgenre of black metal..." and then have Amon Amarth as top artist?

      It used to be an actual genre, however, its original definition was too narrow and only included a dozen bands, making it useless. Over time, the definition slowly stretched, and now includes some of viking-themed Folk metal.

      So bands would you describe as original viking metal bands? Because the most important ones I come up with are Bathory, Windir and Mithotyn and they don't really sound a lot alike. It's just the lyrical themes.

        I think of Bathory, Falkenbach and probably Einherjer. Falkenbach in particular I consider the standard for "old" Viking Metal. Interestingly, there are still bands that play similar kind of music - a slower, darker, less folk-y Viking metal. Doomsword is the first that comes to mind.

      Amon Amarth isn't viking metal and often get mislabeled as that. Not the genre's or the writer's fault here.

      Turisas fit the genre perfectly. They have evolved far beyond traditional Folk metal. They embraced the mid-tempo choir&growl epic-ness of Falkenbach and Bathory. Check out Take the Day, The March of Varangian Guard, Holmgad and Beyound. Tracks like this could be made by Falkenbach,
