Who is Dianne Doan?

Dianne Doan is a Canadian actress from Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Vikings fan may recognise her role in Disney’s Descendants and ABC’s Once Upon A Time.

In Descendants, Doan played the role of Lonnie the daughter of Mulan and Li Shan.

She has played the role of Lonnie in the TV series, which first aired in 2015 and the three film series which aired in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

In Once Upon a Time, Doan portrayed Isra in season two, episode 18, titled Selfless, Brave and True.

She starred alongside Josh Dallas, Robert Carlyle, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison

Viewers may also recognise Doan from TV Lands’ Impastor as Chelsea and Anh Ly in Legends of Tomorrow.

The 29-year-old actress began performing as a young child and began technical dance training at the age of 10.

In her teens, she performed as a dancer in the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics as well as a backing dancer for Michael Buble.

She has also worked as one of the dancers on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance.

In 2017, Doan landed the role of the twin sisters Faith and Grace Park-Jensen in Verizon’s and Awesomeness TV’s web series, Guidance.

Doan currently stars as Mai Ling in Warrior alongside Andrew Koji, Olivia Cheng and Jason Tobin.

The series was produced by filmmaker Justin Lin and was based on an original concept by the late Bruce Lee.

In 2019, she became engaged to The Good Place’s Manny Jacinto.

Who did Dianne Doan play in Vikings?

Dianne Doan played Yidu in Vikings on Amazon Prime and History.

Doan appeared in seven episodes in season four only, making her debut in episode one titled A Good Treason.

Yidu was an Asian slave, who had been captured in Frankia and taken back to Kattegat.

Due to her Asian ethnicity, Aslaug (played by Alyssa Sutherland), decided to purchase her but her foreign appearance captured the attention of her husband, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel).

The two late became lovers and she persuaded Ragnar to let her join him on one of his raids to Paris.

Yidu had helped care for Ragnar and provided him with a drug – believed to be either Opium or Betel - to help him cope with his pain which he subsequently became addicted to.

Despite their close relationship, an enraged Ragnar drowned Yidu after she refused to give him any more drugs.

She had also threatened to reveal Ragnar’s guilt over the secret slaughter in Wessex.

Her death was witnessed by his sons, Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith)and Hivtserk (Marco Ilsø ).

Later in the series, it was unveiled she was the illegitimate daughter of the Chinese emperor.

The character Yidu was based on the Tang dynasty Princess Yidu, the daughter of China Tang ninth emperor Dezong.

Yidu was last seen in season four, episode eight, titled Portage.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about her time on Vikings and Yidu’s death Doan said: “It was the most out-of-body experience.

“On the day, it was misty, grey weather. It rains all the time in Ireland, but there was something odd about this day.

“They had a body double for me because we had things to shoot afterwards, so they didn’t want me soaking.

“So we did everything up until the actual drowning, and I asked if I could sit in the tent.

“So I got to watch it happen. The double was dressed exactly like me. It was the most terrifying thing.

“I was screaming in the tent because it looked so real. And then, of course, like any Hollywood thing, we ended up doing the actual drowning scene, with the close-ups, a few weeks later.”
