Vikings season six will be the last ever series of the historical drama. The sixth series will see Ragnar Lothbrok's (played by Travis Fimmel) sons Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig), Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) and Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) continue to raid lands across Europe, including the United Kingdom. Gunnhild is the wife of Bjorn Ironside, here’s everything you need to know about the character and the actress Ragga Ragnars who plays her.

Who plays Gunnhild? Who is Ragga Ragnars?

Ragnheiður Ragnarsdóttir, also known as Ragga Ragnars, plays Gunnhild in Vikings.

Ragnars is an Icelandic actress, from Reykjavík, Iceland.

She is 34-years-old and stands at approximately 6ft 2in tall.

Ragnars is a former professional swimmer, who specialised in sprint freestyle events.

She made her Olympic debut as Iceland's youngest swimmer at age 19, at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Ragnars also competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

She is a multiple-time record holder for both long and short course freestyle.

In 2012, Ragnars retired from swimming and studied acting at New York Film Academy (NYFA) in Los Angeles.

In 2018, she landed her first acting role as Gunnhild in Vikings season five.

In an interview with the NYFA, Ragnars said: “Acting has always been a passion I have had. While I was swimming, acting was always in the back of my head.

“I don’t think it’s something I decided. I just always knew I would be an actress. Since I can remember, I knew that it was something I had to do.”

Who is Gunnhild?

Gunnhild is based on the real Gunnhild, Mother of Kings from the Icelandic sagas, Fagrskinna, Egils saga, Njáls saga, and Heimskringla.

In the Sagas, she is mentioned as the wife of Eric Bloodaxe, who was the King of Norway, King of Orkney and King of Jórvík.

Between the years 931-934, she ruled as Queen consort of Norway, before spending the rest of her life in exile in Orkney, Jorvik and Denmark.

Her father-in-law was Harald Fairhair (Peter Franzén) and after his death, Gunnhild and her husband were overthrown and exiled.

In the History series Vikings, Gunnhild is a shield-maiden and the wife of Bjorn Ironside, which makes her the Queen of Kattegat.

When is Vikings season 6 out?

Unfortunately, Vikings season six does not have an official release date.

However, the epic final season will return to screens in November 2019.

Episodes will air on History in the US and will drop on Amazon Prime in the UK the following day.
