Vikings: Bjorn asks Porunn if she will marry him

Does Bjorn Ironside really love Ingrid in Vikings?

In Vikings season six, part one, Bjorn Ironside had an affair with Kattegat servant Ingrid (Lucy Martin).

After his pregnant wife Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars) found out about the affair, she offered a proposal fans did to see coming.

Instead of leaving her unfaithful husband, Gunnhild suggested Bjorn marry Ingrid and they could live in a three-person marriage.

She said: “I am not jealous. I was not born that way, but I see you are in love with Ingrid and nothing will change that either.

“I think you should be released from servitude and marry Bjorn.

“If you two are in agreement we will all live together and our child will have the benefit of having two mothers.”

Appearing dumbfounded, Gunnhild reminded Bjorn his father had suggested the idea to his wife Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) after he got Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland), who would later become his wife, pregnant.

Bjorn did not seem pleased with the suggestion, arguing Lagertha rejected Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) offer and divorced him instead.

Speaking at the Vikings Comic-Con at Home panel, Alexander Ludwig addressed Bjorn’s love life.

He revealed Thorunn/Porunn (Gaia Weiss) was Bjorn’s greatest love and after her disappearance, he used sex as a way of “self-medicating”.

Ludwig said: “I think that after Thorunn/Porunn left he had written off everything and kinda just used his sexual exploits as a way of self-medicating.”

Thorunn/Porunn was last seen in season three and her current whereabouts are currently unknown.

In season three, Thorunn/Porunn was suffering from severe depression after being brutally beaten by a Mercian warrior.

When Thorunn/Porunn's injuries healed, she was left with a large V-shaped scar on the right-hand side of her face, making her feeling like a failure as a shield woman.

As a result of her suffering, Thorunn/Porunn alienated her husband Bjorn, despite his insistence he loved her and was content.

Torvi (Georgia Hirst) came across Bjorn alone and the two shared a kiss, despite Bjorn insisting that he loved his wife.

Midway through season three, Thorunn/Porunn left Kattegat behind while her husband Bjorn and other Viking warriors were invading Paris.

Fans took to Reddit to share their theories on Bjorn’s behaviour.

Beavisdog wrote: “He didn't exactly have a good role model. Ragnar was jealous of his sons before most of them were born since the Seer told him they would have more glory than he.

"He was a right s*** to Bjorn when Porunn got hurt in battle. Ragnar didn't improve as a parent, either- he murdered his Chinese slave in front of young Ubbe [Jordan Patrick Smith] and Hvitserk [Marco Ilsø], and basically used and manipulated Ivar (Alex Hogh Andersen) to carry out his vengeance.

"I'm honestly not surprised that Bjorn was a less than exemplary family man.”

A second fan suggested Bjorn may change in part B, following Lagertha’s death.

"After he loses his mother knowing how much Lagertha was taking care and always present for him, he will know how much he's important for his children and wife.”

A third fan, Stevegrey1 said: “I think because the first girl he loved went to war and got badly wounded I think this scarred him in some way because she left him she didn’t feel like she could keep him satisfied or if they could still love each other I guess he may not put in the effort that’s necessary or love the same and he is pretty much run by power he wants to be better than Ragnar.”

In the season six finale, Bjorn’s rival, King Harald (Peter Franzén) raped Bjorn’s new wife Ingrid.

He brought her to his room against her will after she refused his offer to become Harald’s only wife and the Queen of Norway.

Following the assault, Harald promised to marry Ingrid if Bjorn died in battle.Ingrid was last seen collapsing into the arms of King Olaf (Steven Berkoff) near the water.
