Vikings: Amazon Prime release trailer for final season

Vikings season six, part two, is arriving on Amazon Prime Video on December 30 and the trailer has already confirmed Katia (played by Alicia Agneson) will return in Kiev. Katia was the new wife of Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky), but Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) was convinced she was actually his ex-wife Freydis (also Agneson). Fans have been wondering whether Katia and Freydis are the same person, and the show's creator Michael Hirst revealed the answer to Express.co.uk.

Is Katia a hallucination of Freydis?

Katia was introduced in the first half of season six as a Russian princess who was married to Prince Oleg.

She met Ivar when he joined Oleg's court, and he immediately recognised her as being his ex-partner, Freydis.

Ivar had strangled and killed Freydis in a previous season, and fans were left confused by the uncanny resemblance.

The same actress Agneson plays both characters and viewers have been wondering why she has appeared as two different people.

Hirst said how Katia's character has a metaphorical meaning as she represents, in a literal form, Ivar's guilt for killing Freydis.

• Vikings season 6 part 2: Will Oleg turn Hvitserk against Ivar?

Hirst said fans will find out a lot more about Katia and Freydis in the final 10 episodes. There is a moment in the first half of season six when Hvitserk [Marco Ilsø] rejoined Ivar and was taken to the court.

Ivar asked Hvitserk if he recognised Katia, but Hvitserk said he had no idea what he was talking about.

Hirst said: "A little later Ivar says certain things to Katia and she explains what she thinks Ivar has seen and why it was important for Ivar to see this.

"You could say this new Ivar, the one who is protecting the prince Igor [Oran Glynn O'Donovan], is guilty of killing Freydis.

"He had real feelings for Freydis, he killed her apparently without remorse, but I think he is suffering from remorse.

"There are a number of reasons why he might mistakenly think somehow she has been reborn, or she is standing in front of him.

"It's definitely her spirit. For me, it was never the same woman, but I needed you to see from Ivar's point of view.

"If I had cast someone else and she didn't look like her, that's less interesting. To use the same actress was far more interesting."

So Katia's character is in fact a way of conveying Ivar's guilt, as he started to show signs of redemption in the first half of season six.

Ever since he was banished from Kattegat by Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), Ivar realised how weak he actually was and started to regret certain things.

This would explain why Hvitserk did not recognise Katia as Freydis, as he did not share the guilt Ivar felt. To Hvitserk, Katia may look entirely different, but to Ivar, she resembles the lover he tragically lost.

Fans had been suggesting their own theories as to Katia's identity, with user heyrene saying on Reddit: "So although we as the audience, and Ivar, sees Katya to be some kind of resurrection of Freydis...is it only Ivar (and the audience) who sees her this way?

"In that conversation between Hvitserk and Ivar, it seemed like Hvitserk didn’t recognize Katya’s 'resemblance' to Freydis at all.

"I was just wondering if you all think the resemblance might just be in Ivar’s head (maybe some kind of spell?) or if Katya is actually Freydis resurrected? [sic]"

Fans have agreed they believe Katia's identity is psychological and Ivar has started to, reluctantly, see himself in Oleg.

Both men murdered their wives and they are both guilty of self-indulgence, and now Katia is the one physical entity connecting them both.

Queen_of_the_night18 said: "It’s Ivar projecting his feelings. She might have some sort of resemblance even if Hivtserk would not say it.

"I mean, Hivtserk knows she is dead and it’s physically impossible for her to be Freydis so he doesn’t care. And Hivtserk had delusions of Ivar and Thora [Eve Connolly] so he knows people see whatever they like to see."

Some fans have suggested Katia is a doppelganger Oleg is using to manipulate Ivar, making him think she is Freydis resurrected.

With Katia playing a bigger role in the final episodes, Ivar will be staring his demons in the face, and it will force him to change his ways.
