Vikings: Gunnhild swims out to sea to 'be with Bjorn'

Vikings season six, part two was the final instalment in the saga and it was full of dramatic twists. Ingrid (played by Lucy Martin) had transformed into a relentless and powerful witch, who wanted to rule Kattegat. Fans have been wondering how Ingrid got her powers, and whether she has always been a witch.

Has Ingrid always been a witch?

Vikings six, part B provided a satisfying ending for many of the characters but there are some mysteries that remain unsolved.

In the first half of season six, Ingrid was simply a citizen of Kattegat who caught the eye of Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) and the pair got married.

She ended up being raped by King Harald (Peter Franzén) and she appeared broken by the terrifying ordeal.

In the final episodes, however, she had transformed into a powerful shieldmaiden who helped Bjorn in the second round of the Rus battle.

From this, it appears she used her tragic past to channel her anger and she trained to become a fierce fighter.

Following Bjorn's death, there was a question as to whether she would become the new leader of Kattegat.

Ingrid initially seemed reluctant, but after speaking to Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars) she was keen to put her name forward.

She was then seen performing a ritual at Bjorn's tomb and Erik (Eric Johnson) discovered she was, in fact, a witch.

Her powers and her connection to the gods seemed to grow stronger throughout the season and she ended up turning Erik blind.

With Erik incapacitated, she was able to worm her way up the hierarchy and gain the respect of other leaders in the area.

Some fans were confused by her character arc as there was no explanation as to how and when she became a witch.

She was known to have been a slave of Erik's, but viewers are curious to know if she had already been a witch at the time.

WestenderMD said on Reddit: "I don't understand what is implied. That she rules happily because she has supposedly Bjorn's son?

"Everything with her in it was intriguing, exciting - but it fell flat to me. Was she revealed to be a witch before the break because I don't remember. It felt really hamfisted with how many times something else got added to her backstory.

"She was just a girl who had eyes for Bjorn. Then she's a witch. Then she's a slave before she came to Kattegat and remembers Erik and never said anything to Gunnhild, or anyone?"

Some fans believe her journey to become a witch was purely to enable her character to build further in the final episodes.

Rambl3On said: "I hated Ingrid when she was introduced. For a whole half a season she was just there to have sex with Bjorn. She finally got a bit of character with her witch stuff towards the end but it was too little too late to really make anyone root for her."

Others have said her witch storyline was unnecessary, as other female characters like Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) never used their special abilities to their advantage.

Environmental_Run34 said: "Didn’t see why it was necessary for Ingrid to be a “witch”. Aslaug was always called a witch but she never used that weird sorcery stuff Ingrid did (obviously visions which Ingrid didn't have) which no other character has in any episode before her.

"Seemed like a weird concept to just introduce in the last series and it served no purpose. She could have just killed Eric rather than using her “magic” to blind him then kill him. Seemed rather pointless imo [sic]."

The answer to Ingrid's sudden change in storyline could have been an opportunity for her to get revenge and prove her strength.

The show's creator Michael Hirst previously explained how he was an advocate for strong and powerful female characters in the series.

Following her ordeal with Harald, it seemed fair that she should be given the opportunity to prove herself as a powerful woman.

Actress Martin has been sharing plenty of photos of herself in character as Ingrid on her Instagram profile, saying she was "forever grateful" to be a part of the show.

One fan commented: "Best and most interesting character in the final season for me. You're a phenomenal actress. Just wish it wasn't all over."
