Vikings: Amazon Prime release trailer for final season
Vikings will return for season six, part two, on Amazon Prime Video on December 30 and the final 10 episodes will see many storylines wrap up. One question fans are still keen to know the answer to is what happened to Bjorn's (played by Alexander Ludwig) wife Thorunn (Gaia Weiss) after she disappeared from Kattegat, having been badly injured. Michael Hirst has spoken exclusively to Express.co.uk about Thorunn's ending and why she never came back.
What happened to Thorunn in Vikings?
Thorunn, or Porunn, was introduced to the historical drama in season two, and she was a servant who caught Bjorn's eye during a dinner party.
Article continues below ADVERTISEMENTBjorn had invited Thorunn to spend the night with him, as she told him she had been sleeping outside with the other slaves.
Over time, Bjorn and Thorunn developed romantic feelings for each other and Thorunn started to train as a shieldmaiden so she could fight alongside him in battles.
In season three, Thorunn went to Wessex with Bjorn to fight against the Saxons, and she was pregnant with Bjorn's child at the time.

Vikings season 6 part 2: What happens to Hvitserk? 'A total surprise'
She gave birth to a daughter but said she was not fit to be a mother or wife due to her scarred face.
Despite being told otherwise by Bjorn and his family, Thorunn decided she could no longer stay and she decided to leave Kattegat while Bjorn was away.
She was not mentioned again after she left the series, and fans were left wondering what happened to her and whether she will return.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Hirst said he had not thought about Thorunn's fate after she was written out of the series.
He said: "Her story effectively ended when she left, I have never had plans to bring her back.

"It was a tremendously tragic story, it was a long time ago. I do think deeply about death and disappearances because I love my characters.
"I know Thorunn disappeared and I didn't want to imagine what would become of her, she just disappeared out into the darkness.
"I have often thought, can I reprive her and save her in some way? But in many ways that was the start of Bjorn's trouble with women."
Some fans believed Thorunn would return, while others understood her to have died somewhere along the way after she fled.
From Hirst's thoughts, it seemed her character's ending was left open, and her disappearance did in fact cause Bjorn's future relationships to spiral.

Vikings season 6 part 2: Will Gunnhild and Ingrid fight for Queen?
After Thorunn, he went on to marry Torvi (Georgia Hirst) but their relationship did not work out and Torvi went on to marry Bjorn's brother Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith).
He had a number of lovers in between, but his third wife was Snaefrid (Dagny Backer Johnsen), a princess whom he married to confirm the Seer's (John Kavanagh) prophecy.
She later died in battle, and Bjorn went on to marry Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars), and this was his first successful relationship.
Gunnhild loved and admired her husband, but Bjorn's wandering eye soon returned and he fell for Kattegat citizen Ingrid (Lucy Martin).
Gunnhild reluctantly let Bjorn marry Ingrid as his second wife, and at the end of the first half of season six, both of his wives suffered uncertain fates.

Vikings season 6 part 2: Will Gunnhild sacrifice herself?
Ingrid had been raped by King Harald (Peter Franzén) and Gunnhild had fled the Rus battle between Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) and Bjorn.
Speaking of what is still to come, Hirst said: "The story of the last ten episodes takes place in different theatres, in different worlds.
"The theatre of war, the theatre of power, and the theatre of love. Love not just between men and women, but between brothers, between fathers and sons, and between ghosts.
"Kattegat is always one of my theatres, because that has always been the centre of Lothbrok power. It’s been home to Ragnar [Travis Fimmel] and his family. I said from the beginning that the show was the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons, and so it will be to the end.
"At the start of these last episodes, all of Ragnar’s sons are still alive, although Bjorn, his eldest son, as we know, is badly wounded. He has returned to Kattegat. He has returned home."
Although Thorunn will not be returning for the final episodes, there are plenty of powerful women whose fates will be decided ahead of the series finale.
