Abstract

Using information provided by former Securitate Archives, the author tries in this research to investigate the way how the literary activity of Virgil Gheorghiu, one of the most important writers of Romanian exile from France were presented in the informative notes written by the agents of that institution. Their way of understanding his work and ideas, the errors of their perception but also other aspects are therefore emphasized there. Also, their attitude towards his anti-communist perceptions and the value of his novels is presented there together with their attempts to get closer to him using the Romanian Orthodox Patriarch Justinian Marina, his parents who were living in Neamţ county, other relatives and some of the Securitate agents, in order to convince him to visit Romania. The way how his bad relationships with the other members of the exile have influenced his image is also a topic developed in this research.

The fall of Communism gave way to a frantic search for the “truth” wherein competing narratives aimed at expunging collective memory and reconstruct national identity. In post-socialist Romania memory, history and justice have become embedded in an ongoing struggle for political power between the surviving forces of the old regime and those who believe in a complete break with the pre-1989 nationalist-communist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. In national historiographies, the inclusion of exile literature is still subject to the concept of the traditional background. This means that it is based on the convention of a unified language, ethnic group, and territory, stemming from the French identity model of État-Nation that was adopted by European cultures in the 18th and 19th centuries. This principle also serves as the basis for another function of the national language: it is the only one that can provide the means of expression for national literature. On the other hand, the events of the 20th century and transition to the new millennium are showing us that cultural reality does not conform to this model. Based on documents found in the former Securitate Archive of Bucharest, but also on the works of Virgil Gheorghiu and André Scrima, both Orthodox priests, writers and personalities with a cultural impact, and on publications dedicated to them, the authors of this study try to emphasise the way in which their work in the ecumenical field was reflected in the documents of the Securitate. The purpose is to investigate whether the agents who were in charge of surveillance were interested in this topic, which particular aspects were of interest or made them intensify their work, and how they interacted with the activity of the aforementioned priests in the ecumenical field. The study will present two relevant examples (case studies) and will contribute to the understanding of the way in which the Romanian communist regime regarded ecumenism and tried to use it to its advantage.

The author´s writings, although literary and fictional, are useful for the cultural historian as historical documents, containing cultural products of their time, such as mentalities, stereotypes, language, and so on. His writings concerning World War I are constructed in two directions, both sharing a common feature: the drama. On the one hand, the author´s focus turns to collective drama and on the other hand to individual drama.

Two things have been greatly lacking since 1989 in regard to the history of history in Romania. The first is a detailed, factual synthesis of their historiographical past by the Romanians themselves 1 . There have been a number of significant works by the leading historiographers of Romania (such as Lucian Boia, Pompiliu Teodor, and Alexandru Zub), but these have not included comprehensive surveys of that historiography. For example, Lucian Boia's interests considerably expanded following 1989, but his useful 1976 student manual Evoluția istoriografiei Române 2 unfortunately was never revised or republished. It is true that his work on the mythologies of the Romanian past, which are part and parcel of the history of Romanian history, have been spectacularly controversial, but these were not designed to be comprehensive 3 .

Our historiography of the last half century has travelled a path in consensus with the evolution of Romanian society itselfsomething easily noticeable, in my opinion, for an objective evaluator and devoid of passion or harmful and counterproductive political-resentment biases, which distorts realities, characters and attitudes. Of an evolution in which, it is true, politics has prevailed, in the given historical context, to a large extentbut not exclusively and deterministicallyin outlining the directions of thematic approach of Historiography; respectively, of a scientific discipline for which depoliticization (again, to be emphasized, nota bene, in the given political context) and professionalization, at the beginning of the seventh decade, were trained, together with the venerable and consecrated professors, and young researchers and academics who they would become, in time, themselves consecrated representativesand some also emblematicof the Romanian historical science.

Gheorghe Gheorghiu, who later became Gheorghiu-Dej, can be considered a person whose destiny could become exceptional only after important moments of historical turmoil. Coming from a poor workers' family, Gheorghiu-Dej was brought into prominence as a result of the huge global shift produced by the Second World War. During the interval 1945-1965 he has played an increasingly important political role and his activity is one of the favourite subjects for several historical studies. Having the advantage of a rich historical literature, as well as the access to primary sources 1 , in the present study we set to grasp the way in which Gheorghiu-Dej understood and then conceived Romania's eastern neighbourhood and, obviously, the relation with the Soviet Union in the interval 23 August 1944 – March 1965 (until the end of his life). Our scientific undertaking is neither repetitive nor a synthesis of the several edited or archive sources; instead, we are using a new interpretation grid of some facts which are, for the most part, already known. The method we propose does not aim at a simple narration of diplomatic history, but it attempts to analyze Romania's foreign policy in the interval 1945-1965 from the perspective of Gheorghiu-Dej's power interests. The main hypothesis of our research is that Gheorghiu-Dej conceived Romania's relation with the Soviet Union not as a distinct political process, with separate rules from the national political life, but as an instrument for increasing his personal power. Thus, we break, of course, with the classical explanations of the realist school (dominated by the idea of competition between impersonal forces), and bringing into discussion psychological-historical elements, with their advantage of including the individual into the core of historical explanation. The general rule under which we operate is the diachronic exposure of the study's subject, along three subtopics: ideological definition of neighbourhood; geopolitical aspects of the relation with the Soviet Union; diplomatic activity elements determined by Romania's neighbourhood with the " big neighbour " from the East.

Călinescu's method of critical inquiry is based on biography and psychoanalysis. Thus, in his capital work The History of Romanian Literature from Its Origins to the Present, portrayal techniques have an essential role in conveying ideas. Nevertheless, his interest in anecdote has usually been ignored because it has been considered only the residual, unserious part of his critical vocation. What I aim in the present article is to prove that the anecdote represents not only the very engine of Călinescu's ideas, but also the incentive of the creative process. Taking into consideration the anecdote's mediation and remediation role, I aim at analyzing the subtle exchanges between the book's "matters" (enchaining a series of monographs/ portraits) and the book's matter (Călinescu's choice of book illustrations and paper) in the process of building a monument of petty things.

In this article the author first examines the general framework that characterizes the reign of Tsar Nikolai I in the Russian Empire. At the same time, the author establishes the main directions in different areas, the attitude and position of the autocrat regarding the religious policy, the attitude towards dominant Orthodox Church and towards other religious currents. Continuing with the religious side, the author focuses on the legal issue and on the situation of the Jews in Bessarabia during Nicolai I. For a consistent and accurate speech, there are highlighted the main legal provisions and rules which regulated the evolution of Jewish community in Bessarabia over 30 years. To determine more exactly the status of this demographic segment between the Prut and Dniester, the comparative method is used, as to the rest of representatives of the Jewish faith from the Russian Empire so to the local population, so as to determine the attitude more or less favorable of the imperial authorities towards the Jews, as well as the causes that generated this.

Transilvania , 2022

The present essay aims at discussing the recent volume Creolizing the Modern: Transylvania across Empires (2022) by Anca Parvulescu and Manuela Boatcă as a significant contribution to the recent attempts at rethinking Romanian literature. In this regard, the examination of the volume is constantly reckoned in dialogue with some of the previously undertaken projects. The dialogic approach highlights two significant aspects, related to both the volume and the context in which it is received. On the one hand, it shows that the theoretical and methodological framework deployed in the volume can constitute the ground for future studies. On the other hand, it draws attention to the fact the rethinking of Romanian literature has been a collective and gradual endeavor.
