Their way of understanding his work and ideas, the errors of their perception but also other aspects are therefore emphasized there. Also, their attitude towards his anti-communist perceptions and the value of his novels is presented there together with their attempts to get closer to him using the Romanian Orthodox Patriarch Justinian Marina, his parents who were living in Neamţ county, other relatives and some of the Securitate agents, in order to convince him to visit Romania. The way how his bad relationships with the other members of the exile have influenced his image is also a topic developed in this research.

Art Historical Writing during Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej's Regime. The Case of Academic Painting in the Romanian Academy's Scholarly JournalRoxana ModreanuBrukenthal. Acta Musei 2, 2020
This study follows the way in which Academism was discussed in the pages of the academic journal Studii și cercetări de istoria artei [Studies and Research of Art History] from 1954, the first year the magazine was issued, until 1964. This was the Institute of Art History’s academic journal and can be considered the official scholarly publication of the time in the field of art history. This paper aims at showing that even in the discourse about Academism there is a loosening of ideological restrictions in the late 1950s and the first half of the 1960s. There is a direct relationship between Socialist Realism and art historical discourse from this time and it can be felt especially in the texts dating from the 1950s.

Coming from a poor workers' family, Gheorghiu-Dej was brought into prominence as a result of the huge global shift produced by the Second World War. During the interval 1945-1965 he has played an increasingly important political role and his activity is one of the favourite subjects for several historical studies. Having the advantage of a rich historical literature, as well as the access to primary sources 1 , in the present study we set to grasp the way in which Gheorghiu-Dej understood and then conceived Romania's eastern neighbourhood and, obviously, the relation with the Soviet Union in the interval 23 August 1944 – March 1965 (until the end of his life). Our scientific undertaking is neither repetitive nor a synthesis of the several edited or archive sources; instead, we are using a new interpretation grid of some facts which are, for the most part, already known. The method we propose does not aim at a simple narration of diplomatic history, but it attempts to analyze Romania's foreign policy in the interval 1945-1965 from the perspective of Gheorghiu-Dej's power interests. The main hypothesis of our research is that Gheorghiu-Dej conceived Romania's relation with the Soviet Union not as a distinct political process, with separate rules from the national political life, but as an instrument for increasing his personal power. Thus, we break, of course, with the classical explanations of the realist school (dominated by the idea of competition between impersonal forces), and bringing into discussion psychological-historical elements, with their advantage of including the individual into the core of historical explanation. The general rule under which we operate is the diachronic exposure of the study's subject, along three subtopics: ideological definition of neighbourhood; geopolitical aspects of the relation with the Soviet Union; diplomatic activity elements determined by Romania's neighbourhood with the " big neighbour " from the East.

The fall of Communism gave way to a frantic search for the “truth” wherein competing narratives aimed at expunging collective memory and reconstruct national identity. In post-socialist Romania memory, history and justice have become embedded in an ongoing struggle for political power between the surviving forces of the old regime and those who believe in a complete break with the pre-1989 nationalist-communist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. Twenty five years after the Revolution, Romania’s cultural milieu has not yet escaped the boundaries of the aforementioned paradigm. This paper will not dwell on the critical anthologies cited above. Instead, it will focus on the debates surrounding the critical role of the writer-intellectual and the production of literarure inside an authoritarian regime. The main questions this paper seeks to answer is how should we approach literature produced during the Communist period? Were literary productions entirely the product of ideology? How did the literary canon evolve and how was it influenced by the historical and political context of the time? In an effort to break away from the socialist regime should all literary creations produced during he Communist era be discarded? In retrospect how should one asses the role of the writer/intellectual?

This paper is an interrogation into the nature and final results of the national project which the Romanian cultural association "Junimea" intended to implement both culturally and socially through its aesthetic program and its outspoken leader Titu Maiorescu, in the context of their country staying well behind its possibilities in the second-half of the 19 th century. Though there are quite a lot of studies already dealing with this phenomenon in the then Romanian culture, our endeavor will not ignore their contribution to this field, however it will challenge the idea that Maiorescu's efforts towards a better art were in great consonance with the real need for a satisfactory politics and society. The title of the present study is itself questioning the accuracy of some traditional inquiries into the Junimea moment of Ro-manian culture, which are more that laudatory of the role of this association as represented by Maiorescu, but tend to leave untouched its failure to...

In national historiographies, the inclusion of exile literature is still subject to the concept of the traditional background. This means that it is based on the convention of a unified language, ethnic group, and territory, stemming from the French identity model of État-Nation that was adopted by European cultures in the 18th and 19th centuries. This principle also serves as the basis for another function of the national language: it is the only one that can provide the means of expression for national literature. On the other hand, the events of the 20th century and transition to the new millennium are showing us that cultural reality does not conform to this model. Moreover, the models of globalisation, world literature, and post-colonial studies that came widely into use in recent years challenge the limitations of the single national language principle (monolingualism) in our present world and highlight the problem in studies of the cultural processes in the past. In reality n...
