Hi.I have owned metal detectors for many years starting with a very basic C Scope swan handled motion detector with no discrimination if I remember correctly. After this I bought a second hand C Scope CS4ZX motion/non motion detector which I had for many years and was a fine detector.I thought I would have a change so after much internet searching decided on a Viking VK30 motion/non motion detector as I didn't want to spend lots of money and prefer something easy to operate. It arrived at Christmas and I did some air testing which showed decent depth on modern coins and some of my old finds .I tried a bit of rusty iron with it and just needed to turn the discrimination up to 26 to eliminate the signal completely which is good.On my C Scope i had the discrimination set to 3 and if i had no signal for a while, would pass the detector over my spade to get a beep to make sure it was still working! I did that with the VK30 and nothing happened as the iron discrimination set at 28 completely ignored it! I had to put a 2p piece down if i wanted to check the signal. So absolutely excellent iron discrimination on this :-) I went out to my favourite ploughed field, set the sensitivity to about 75 and discrimination to 28 and spent about an hour and a half searching.I was very pleased to find a musket ball in the first 10 minutes and various bits of lead and other small items in that time.I found more than I usually do and a couple of large bits of iron which I was going to ignore but thought I'd dig anyway until I get used to the sounds of the machine. Good items beeped whichever way the head was passed over where as the big iron just seemed to beep once so discrimination seems great.the items I dug were showing between 45-90 on the display so the higher the number the less likely it is to be rusty iron.So very pleased with the performance so far in motion mode.the pinpoint button is accurate.I will post more updates once I've done a bit dry beach detecting and grass field detecting ::g below is a pic of my finds fro first time out.The 10p piece is just for size comparison and the musket ball is the white circle to its left! GRASS FIELD..... Took the VK30 to a grass field today for a practice and it worked well. Unfortunately their is a lot of coke/coal in the fields here which tends to cause a bit falsing. I set the sensitivity to 80 and discrimination to 28 which great for ignoring rusty iron. The field I was in did give a bit falsing on my old detector and I did have some today.it shows up on the Viking by it just making a single beep,so easy enough to ignore and carry on.Double beep is obviously worth digging :) I also tried it out in Non Motion mode which is all metal and this stopped all the falsing from the coke/coal.Any signal it gives can be checked by looking at the display panel and if its showing more than 40 its worth digging,or a couple of times I changed it back to motion mode with the discrimination on and if it passes over silently then its not worth digging.I did dig a couple of times when it did this just to check and each time it was just rusty iron.I didn't find much worthwhile today but its not the most productive of fields at the best of times. So top marks for the Viking today for showing it can cope well with coke/coal simply by using non motion mode.next stop the beach! UPDATE-----took the VK30 back to the grass field for a couple of hours today. The field doesnt have much rubbish in so i used non motion/all metal mode. There was no false signals at all due to coke/coal. I have discovered in non motion mode that if the pinpoint button is held down it changes the detector to motion mode so when i got a signal i did this and checked the number showing on the display which was usually between 5 and 20. I did dig a couple of times to check and both times it was a rusty nail,so the display can be trusted and this saves much wasted digging! I found a musket ball which gave a reading of 85 and a lead bottle top which read 80 on the display. BEACH. Took the Viking down to the beach for an hour to try out this afternoon.Wasn't expecting to find much as there is a lot of sand on the beach so will be better after a storm when a lot of the sand washes away. I set the sensitivity to 80 and discrimination to 36 and pressed the beach mode button also. It worked perfectly on dry sand and damp sand.I only found a few bottle tops and drink cans, but as I say there was really too much sand on the beach at the moment. I did bury my usual 2p piece about 6 inches down in the dry and damp sand and it did detect it without trouble. The tide was coming in as high tide was just a few hours away.I went down to the waters edge and tried the detector over where the water had just washed and again I didn't have any trouble with falsing.I then buried the 2p about 6 inches down and let the tide wash over it.When it was covered by the tide I moved the detector, holding it just above the water and it detected where the 2p was buried without any falsing either side of it.I let the tide run back and dug the 2p out, lying it on the wet sand next to the hole it came out of and it was detected no problem and the detector was silent when moved over the wet hole which I believe can cause other detectors to give a signal. So once again the Viking VK30 performs excellently and it seems beaches are no problem to it :-) I will try again when the tide is out and when there is less sand but don't see there being any problems. My next test will be the tidal water at the river mouth when its low tide but going by how the Viking has performed so far I think it will do it with ease :-) Top Rover45 Posts: 16 Joined: Wed Dec 26, 2018 11:21 am Has thanked: 11 times Been thanked: 37 times

Had an hours detecting today in my favourite ploughed field. The VK30 found these so not bad for an hour. The coin is 2p piece size but very worn so not sure exactly what it is.I think its a button just bellow it on the right, and below the button to the right is a musket ball which obviously hit its target as its flattened out a bit! not sure what the other items are.So far im very impressed with the VK30s ability to detect small items while discriminating out larger iron x; the single PP3 battery is still showing full power on the display and after about 10 hours use is therefor showing no sign of flagging! Thanks for posting this. I have the same detector and I am still getting used to the setting. I normally find a couple of coins and a few musket balls. As of yet I have not found anything on the beach of real value but they can be interesting. Top Rover45 Posts: 16 Joined: Wed Dec 26, 2018 11:21 am Has thanked: 11 times Been thanked: 37 times

No problem Sedgy. There aren't many reviews on the Viking detectors compared with other models which I'm surprised at as I have found my VK30 to be excellent so far.I haven't had much chance to do any detecting this summer but will be out soon when some fields have been ploughed and I still need to detect at the river mouth to review it there 😊 Top User avatar sedgy Posts: 45 Joined: Thu Jun 13, 2019 7:28 am Has thanked: 28 times Been thanked: 29 times

Great attitude ::g It takes months to get to grips with a machine and then we never stop learning more. Sounds like you are doing great :D Top Rover45 Posts: 16 Joined: Wed Dec 26, 2018 11:21 am Has thanked: 11 times Been thanked: 37 times

Thought I would put a small update on. Still very pleased with the detector. I find the single PP3 battery lasts about 30 hours. I found this today. Very pleased to find this. Today I took the VK30 to the beach at Harwich, well Dovercourt actually. We spent about 90 minutes there. The beach is a shingle/pebble/sand combination. I had the settings set exactly how Rover45 suggested upthread, so, discrimination 36 and sensitivity at 80. I also had it in beach mode. Not many minutes in and I had a good signal in motion mode, about 85, so I pinpointed it with the non motion function. What we found wasn't very impressive though, it was a piece of cement or concrete with galvanised steel running through it and sticking out of the edges. It was about 18 inches deep though. Apart form that we didn't have much luck. I had several instances I think of falsing. I had a beep, with a good strong 85/90 figure, which I then pinpointed with non motion. When we dug I sometimes lost the signal altogether, or, other times it was there, but we just couldn't find it, and the GP Pointer was no help either, although the VK1 also found something. One weird thing I have noticed with it is sometimes when pinpointing with the VK30, using the red button, sometimes I will get a tone, and it seems to die out, and then come back. Other times I don't get a tone but I get a reading like 95. Sometimes when I get a tone there is no signal strength. Any ideas what is going on. I wouldn't recommend Dovercourt beach, it was like digging through builder's rubble. Last week we took the VK30 and the VK1 out for another couple of outings. Firstly we tried Harlech Beach - total waste of time. Either there's nothing there, or our dtectors are faulty, or they're no good for beaches, or, we 're using them wrong. We then tried my Sister in Law's garden, and there we got bleeps galore! My younger son had previously been really frustrated that the VK1 never found anything. On this occasion it found about 50 .303 casings, dated 1941/2. Some of these were at a depth of about a foot. When he could get no more signal, I put the VK30 over the same spot, and found about another 50. I am now pretty sure that the VK30 has a defective pinpointing button. There seems to be a loose connection of some sort. I remember the pinpoint function used to de-tune almost immediately, personally I stopped using it and just found the sweet spot on the coil to tell me where to dig . Thanks CharlieChap, that's great. I think that must be what's happening! I might contact Viking to see if there's an easy fix. When I had a problem with my son's VK1 they were very helpful and told me what to adjust on the board. Just posting to thank the OP and anyone else who takes the time to write reviews. I'm new to detecting and picked up a VK30 to try on the beaches on holiday. After sheer luck on our first outing I had two desperate days of false readings leaving me ready to throw in the towel. Finding this thread, and a couple of others that reference the VK30 has given me a lovely fourth outing with the VK30. Set to 80% sensitivity, 38/40 discrimination and beach mode, I stuck to the driest top part of the beach and, once I'd learnt that proximity to the sea wall gives falses (steel-reinforced perhaps?), my son and I found something everyone we dug. The beeps were infrequent but suddenly reliable. I didn't use pinpoint mode anymore, but just stuck to repeatable motion beeps. Thanks again! Wet and Dry Sand. I took the VK30 down to the beach today for a proper try on wet and dry sand. I tried it in non motion beach mode but it kept drifting out of tune so changed to motion mode Sensitivity on 70 and discrimination at 40. There was occasional single beeps just like on a coke filled field which is easily ignored. I had a few good double beeps and found a grand total of £2.20 😄 £1.20 in dry sand and £1 in wet sand so that was me quite happy VK30 Review - Metal Detecting Finds - IMG_20220919_175433_786~4.jpg Top Post Reply
