The first VW Golf GTI made its debut 41 years ago. Right up to today, the icon has been making history as the most successful compact sports car in the world. A brief look back: when the Golf Mk 7 makes its debut in 2013, there are two GTI cars: one 'standard' version with 162 kW/220 PS and one 'Performance' version that delivers 169 kW/230 PS to the Golf GTI's drivetrain which is always configured with front-wheel drive. Jump ahead to the year 2017: in the framework of visual and technical updates, both Golf GTI versions get more power output. The 'standard' car is introduced first at the beginning of the year; it now develops the same power output as the previous Golf GTI Performance: 230 PS. Volkswagen is now also introducing the new Golf GTI Performance. Its new output: 180 kW/245 PS, which is 15 PS more than in the previous model. Its maximum torque has been increased by 20 Nm to 370 Nm and is available over a broad engine speed range (between 1,600 and 4,300 rpm). Equipped with this engine, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds; its top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h. These performance figures apply to both the version with a 6-speed manual gearbox and the version with the newly developed 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG). However, the DSG version of the Golf GTI Performance is more fuel-efficient with a (combined NEDC) fuel consumption of 6.3 l/100 km.

Compared to the 230-PS version, the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance also has more standard feature content. Besides offering more power, it also has larger brakes, a front differential and the digital Active Info Display. Both versions of the iconic model feature typical GTI insignia such as the legendary red stripe on the radiator grille and in the LED headlights. In addition, both Golf GTI versions have larger diameter chrome-trimmed tailpipes. Meanwhile, the differences in features between the two Golf GTI models is best explained in two brief summaries.
