Good van for my purpose – I’ve driven transporters since 1980 ..the T2 T3 T4 T5 each owned for ten years or just under now waiting for the T6.1 to be delivered a 22 month wait. I work in construction and can not complain with the performance of any of these vans maybe though good luck but also fortunate to have them from new so no guessing to how they have been treated… Read more

Good after 22k repairs – I purchased a 2010 T5 in 2014 dual turbo diesel with 264k on the clock. I dont know what animal got their hands on this engine but every thing was wrongly done. After a few weeks I have the engine rebuilt, the turbo replaced, stater motor, battery, injectors, etc etc and 22000 dollars in repairs. I must to admit that after all that she drives nice… Read more

but I shake every time I think of how expensive they can be to keep on the road. My last one was a T4 with no faults ever. This car is used for business every day and it gets around 700/800 klm with a full 80 L tank in the city. This is my last WV ever.

Should change their brand name to Faultswagen, Das Faulty! – Too much manufacture defects and engineer designs faults, engine valves tapping crazy like a 300K’s worn engine. Even though the vehicle was only traveled 75K’s (currently it is sitting on 75,256kms). EGR cooler failed at 60K’s caused catastrophic damages on cylinders wall due to aluminium debris gone through to the entire oil system, At 60K’s… Read more

DSG duel mass flywheel rattling like it going to shoot out of the gearbox housing at anytime, gear changing erratically, feels like being bumped from a vehicle behind, driveshaft bearing noisy at 68K’s. Spending more time on the back of a tow truck and in the workshop for repairs than on road. Sliding doors hinges came lose from manufacture defects. Turbochargers boost actuator valve solenoids failure, caused over boosting turbochargers and damaged internal bearings. The van is hardly being used, only use for long trip interstate travels and bought into workshop for due for time routine maintenance. Otherwise, it will just stay inside the garage. Accumulated all repairs bills but excluding routine maintenance, easily cost over half of the vehicle’s purchased price when it was brand new. The best part of it, Faultswagen dealership knows all these common faults from manufacturer, and not interested to be involved. Therefore, every single repairs was out of my pocket, they claimed because my vehicle has serviced by individual VW specialist instead of the dealership. The van has never been misused in it life, e.g off-road or towing and city drives. Previously and current owned, Golf R32, passat R36, Golf 1.9Tdi, 7P Touareg, Audi S3, Audi Q5. From my prolonged period ownership of VAG vehicles for the last 13 years, I did truly realised Faultswagen ‘s built quality and engineering reliability are definitely declining. Suspect they’re still on a journey of recovering from the heavy penalty of the diesel gate scandal.

Love and hate - can’t trust it – - Brought a 2007 T5 with out looking cheap with 100 k with manual transmission - I suspect the van had a hard life potentially towing heavy loads. - After 8 months of owning needed a new gear box with a few other bits and bobs - costing 12 K - So not a great fist impression - It’s had a new alternator and power steering pump in the 5 years… Read more

I’ve owned it and few other minor things Some times the passenger door won’t unlock but then works again ( strange )

- Services and parts are way to expensive in my opinion.

- Some days driving on the longer runs or when the van has been warmed up it drives like a dream Other day it just feels clunky and touchy

- On car sales you don’t see many with over 400k kms so I figure thats about the max you get out of the t5 life span A Toyota Hiace seem to consistently get 600k kms plus with out major repairs from what if read.

- I think Vw look good and feel nice and comfortable to drive but definitely not built to last I’d definitely never buy another Vw ever again.

Definitely going back to Japanese made with my next car

Don't buy VW Crafter 2.0 Engine – I write this review, here at vw transporter because I couldn't find something for vw crafter.if some want to buy a vw crafter, don't. First with aircon problem, who drain the water on driver foot, next I was needed to replace the disc brakes at 17000… Read more

km end cost me 700 dollars from my pocket because the warranty don't cover this...then I ask them how much can drive this car with a full tank...they couldn't answer me, is somewhere 15l per 100km, I test the car in all conditions, nope...nothing under this. Now I'm going back again because my whole roof edges is in waves...I have a roof rack from rhino, special for this car to carry 2 ladders, nothing heavy end the car looks like was made from paper. Full with dent. Crap car, don't buy.

A Great Work Vehicle – I stepped out of a hilux and into this VW transporter . I new that this ute was something special from the first test drive. Driving, cornering, breaking and gear box all excellent. Cabin noise was a little high, you can't listen to the radio while driving along A highway. Softer compound tyres fixed that problem. Fuel economy is great even… Read more

with a full load. Will never go back to a petrol powered ute again.

The interior is basic plastic and vinyl, so it's easy to keep clean. The dash looks great when lit up at night and is very easy to read. The dash mounted gear leaver feels natural to use, this frees up the floor area and you don't feel boxed in.

My dislikes., would be the cost of repairs.You have to change the timing belt every 100000km and VW recommend that you change the water pump at the same time, that's $1400.00 each time.

I had a turbo blow up at 135000km , VW quoted $7k to fix. I had it replaced for $3k. After that I change the oil every 10000km not at the recommended 15000km.

Replaced the steering rack after 240000km and just now at 285000km I had to replace the two drive shafts.

There is a lot of front end repairs I think this is due to this vehicle being front end drive. I do drive up and down gutters a lot this could cause some long term damage. I am in my VW all day everyday, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

After the normal service book servicing at $450.00 /10000km this vehicle has cost me on average $1000.00 each year.

I do work the VW hard , I just love driving this large bug.

T5 with 216,000km – 2.5 L Tdi auto 2008 ex ambulance. Been good so far, used mainly for long trips escorting wide loads till recently, purchased with 46k on the clock. an aftermarket oil cooler fitted last service (45k ago) I think it very important to get the auto serviced regularly. My T4 transporter 2.5L Tdi totally self destructed the auto trans at 128k. Cost me over $9000, ouch. Did well over 400,000km on the reconditioned box tho till I parked it in the back yard for retirement. Had a big oil cooler fitted to the T4 after the recon, which seemed to do the trick. So far the T5 has been cheaper to run than the T4 as far as general maintenance goes by 2 to 3 grand up till the 216k mark anyway.

Scraped at 45,000km! – Yes, these are a great van, VW know that once you drive it you'll be hooked an so they can forget about reliability and customer service. Mine was the older 'big block' 2.5TDI. Skylines).

Sadly VW's just aren't built to last. To scrap a vehicle at 45,000km due to a cracked cylinder head should be viewed as environmental vandalism (oh wait, that's exactly what VW did with 'dieselgate'). It's not so much that the engine failed, it's that VW charge $18,000 for a replacement head, and that independent's aren't willing to take on the risk, that makes what is actually a fairly minor repair a car scrapper. By the time the other little issues were fixed (I also had the common steering column & driveshaft issues - and you may as well replace the clutch and DMF while the engine's out) you're close to $25K out of pocket. A new "Runner" T5 could be had for $30k drive away at the time, and there's of course no guarantee that they'd actually fix it right.

Just for laughs a new VW engine will set you back $34K, when Holden will sell you a 400hp LS3 V8 crate engine for $10K, now if only they sold one wrapped in a van...

Great vehicle with some flaws – I've owned this van from new. The Beach is a great soft camper concept based on the T5 Transporter in Australia (the Multivan elsewhere). It was a bargain when you consider the inclusions over the cost of a bare Transporter: - factory Comfort (tinted) windows all round, two opening windows in the "mid" positions; - second "leisure"… Read more

battery fitted under passenger seat;

- swiveling front bucket "Captains" seats with adjustable arm rests;

- a two seater bench in the cargo bay that folds flat to form part of a spacious double bed;

- huge metal drawer under the bench seat unit;

- rails in the cargo floor that permit adjustment of rear bench position;

- cargo net storage in rear ceiling trim;

- two cargo storage bags that clip into rails around rear side windows;

- remote diesel heater in rear;

- nifty vehicle graphics that identify the model.

If you needed to carry a load, the contents of the cargo bay can be removed to return the van to a basic Transporter configuration.

The last of the traditional Tiptronic automatic units have ensured that the drive line has been problem free. Lucky to have a 2006 model that missed the production problem with the oil cooler; and the misfortune of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Fuel efficient, reliable, great value for money, fantastic to drive Lots of irritating fit & finish issues, trims pieces replaced numerous times, delays waiting for parts, local cost of parts & options when compared to Europe

A Remarkable Workhorse - Gutsy, turns on a sixpence, easy to park – I purchased my LWB Mid Roof Transporter about 6 years ago second hand. More on auto g'box – Hi again, after spending $8000 on a reco g'box and oil cooler, the auto g'box technician informs me that the new set up will be good for between 50 and 70 thousand k's. VW Australia want $15000 + gst for a new g'box. The cause of all these failures is: The G'box oil isn't changed, ( VW management ) and cause they're hauling a big van and often… Read more

plenty of gear about, trailers etc. the g'box oil gets hot and starts to breakdown, this gums up/block is the fine oil galleries in the oil cooler, this causes a snowball effect. The oil overheats more, breaks down more, gums up more, overheats more, and so on, until finally the destruction of the auto g'box occurs.

To all those with T5 autos, change your oil yesterday and if you've got a good mechanic. Install a after market oil cooler

Most dissapointing purchase ive made – For a NEW vehicle purchased sept 2014 it is missing all basic features unless you pay(and pay you will- VW aren't shy to charge big$) for them as an extra. frustrating and if something was to spill it will go straight into the fuse box located beneath(great idea VW)

So far it has been fine mechanically, but after all this basic stuff going wrong i am no longer at ease with this car and every time i get in I'm wondering what's going to break next.

I also had a quick flick through the owners manual, which is incredibly basic and missing things like fusebox locations and layouts. Why VW think this is acceptable is beyond me?

Wish I'd never bought it.

I looked at the Vito and iload both drove fine but i didnt like the petition welded behind the seats(crewvan) in the iload or how the vito has its spare tire mounted to the wall in the rear of the van.

T5 Auto Transmission knackered 115,000km – I took my 2007 VW T5 for an Auto Transmission service at 115,000km. I was told it needed a new valve body. transmission engineers I spoke to, who once worked for a VW service center, was less than complimentary about the T5 6 speed transmissions and the new 7 speed DSG. In short I was told they were both rubbish and best avoided. The best chance to avoid trouble was to replace the oil every 20km's to 30km's. What a pile Junk.

I've done nothing about it yet and am feeling pretty jaded at the VW brand that once had such a good rep in my mind. I will no longer sing there praises. Not that they'd care about that too much. Service costs far too high($495.00 oil & filter and tyre rotation!!), 1.9TDI is a noisy engine, brakes and tyres wear out too fast (40000km), weak clutch for a commercial vehicle, expensive metallic paint ($1225).

good to deal with. Reliability is poor. During the warranty period I have had a CV joint replaced, a steering rack replaced, the interior heater replaced and the number plate lamp holder replaced and had a firmware failure. Now at 112000kms and four years of age the automatic transmission failed and a VW reconditioned automatic transmission cost AU$10000 to install. The two VW dealers I used both had shoddy mechanics, for example I found a rag in the engine bay and also noted numerous fasteners missing from various places after services and repairs. When the gearbox was replaced the positive lead to the starter solenoid was left loose and that gave me intermittent starting problems.They also regularly forgot to reset the service interval warning display on the dash.

I like the beast but it is a love hate relationship, the sort that you cannot live with it but cannot live without it. I am still spending money on the short comings even though it cost me $53000 on the road. But it does feel tough and bullet proof and you are king of the road behind the wheel. The problem is that there is nothing else that meets my finicky requirements. Feels bullet proof, comfortable, very good at freeway speeds, great vision, powerful, roomy, very safe, traction control, lots of character, has all I wanted in a van Cheap radio, poor high beam, noisy motor, bouncy ride, pedal layout, badly designed storage spaces, slippery floor and filling with diesel from large diameter nozzles.
